I hadn't meant to run into melee, just far enough to cast the spell, or is that because of the poor lighting that I had to get that close?

Fistan's arcane protection crumbles under the attacks but he is unhurt.
"Sibro Suemmalf", he chants, summoning some of the most powerful magic he has ever used. Light flares in the little chamber as a ball of flame appears behind Fistan. With a gesture he hurls it at one of the sleeping rats (rat B), the searing heat nearly kills it before it wakes up. Fistan's ball of fire hovers above the rat illuminating the chamber and it's occupants.

Reaction: Cast Shield if required to avoid a hit.
Special: Use a luck dice to force a re-roll if Fistan is hit and shield won't block it (anything 20 or higher).
