OOC: Ballista are +6 to hit and deal 3d10 damage, IIRC. So a 19 ought to do it. Dren's Shatter should work well too, as objects have disadvantage on the save.

Tranio holds on to one of the gunwales, looking down on the ballistas below. Before he is aware, one has been fired. He readies a bless spell in case there's another shot.
 


Dren: To the astonishment to both ally and enemy, the dwarf fearlessly leaps over the railing and dives 80 feet towards the prey below. The operator of the ballista is caught completely off guard by the magic gong (rolled a 7) and is launched into the ocean below. The ballista (rolled a 9 with disadvantage) still stands but took damage from the attack as well. (Is Dren landing on the top level with the ballistas or does he want to ride down to the deck / below deck with the giant?)

Ordrar: Your shot would hit. Which ballista would you like to target? The red dot is the unmanned one that Dren just attacked.

Dren's intention is to unman all the balistae so they can't shoot us out of the sky, so he will land as close as he can to the next closest ballista.

OCC: Don't cross the dwarves!

Ordrar:
Your aim is true and your bolt strikes the ballista and operator on the platform opposite Dren. The man is instantly killed and the ballista takes damage.

Ballistas:
There are two remaining ballista operators. It takes a full action to aim the weapon. The remaining one on the same platform as Dren turns his deadly weapon towards the dwarf in front of him. The enemy on the other platform aims the massive crossbow at the balloon in the air.

Dren ignored the ballista aimed at him. He focused across the length of the ship to the other ballista that was aiming at the balloon of their airship. He extended his hand and spoke the words of the universe he had learned from his meditations, and the air around the other ballista shattered with the loud sound of a gong once more.

Then Dren settled into a defensive position and extended his hand again, wiggling his fingers to tell the ballista operator to bring it on.

Shatter: DC 15 Con save. Ballista takes double damage
Shatter damage: 3D8 = [1, 7, 8] = 16

OOC: After casting Shatter (super expensive!), Dren spends another ki for Patient Defense (Dodge action) as his bonus. For his reaction, if the ballista hits him, he will Deflect Missiles to reduce the damage, and if the damage is reduced to 0 he will spend 1 ki to return the ballista bolt back at the operator.
Deflect Missiles: 1D10+13 = [8]+13 = 21

OOC: He plans to attach the anchor to some sturdy part of the other ship and slide down the cable. What would you like me to roll?
