Strange Ruling

Dunno. It would mean that you'll have the sword for 20 attacks or so. sooner or later you'll get a one, and your sword is done for.

Yup.

If you want a durably Keen sword, you need magic to do it :)

hehe...ahem.

Hi again! Just checked this thread - wow, what a number of people thinking like me

About the smith wanting to destroy a magical sword - well, i guess as soon as he starts seeing the dents the sword causes to his precious hammer he will take the sword and stick it into his forge, softening it up....oh, let's say for 10 minutes? I mean it is a FORGE and forges are HOT. So i'd think here the hardness really goes down, right? So this could be a explanation, why he should be able to do it.

As for this group, dkilgo, i am not a player there (luckily). Also it's not really a low-magic group - only two players are way ahead of the others, the cleric mainly...
It's my gf playing there and rulings like this tend to hit me every week. Well, it's at least good for this: i keep mental notes of what happened there under the category "don't make this mistake yourself!" ;) On the other hand, i don't like keeping players sooo low on magics in my games. What is the point in that? If my players feel more happy with +3 stuff, why not give it to them? At least first their opponents put good use to it... ;)

But thanx a lot again for answering!

I wasn't pointing that at you Dougal.

I just don't like the way this cat is running his game. How long has he been playing/DMing?

oh well...

Hi dkilgo!

I know you weren't pointing at me :)
(But my formulation might not have been clear enough)

Well, as far as I know he has been DMing for quite some time, mainly AD&D, but from the stories Darklone told me, he sometimes has fits of, hmm, let's say "murky" rulings. In this case what did bother me was having someone drop weapons without using the effects that could make you drop the weapon...
but in the end, the GM is the GM and what he says is law. *shrug*

Yes, and no, to the thing about what he rules is LAW. There is a fine line between ruling correctly about what the rules present, and blatantly not using the material available to make an accurate judgement. As far as I know there have been many topics that have lead to a heated debate over what the DM can and can not do. I am very leary of this subject.

Agreed.

I'd put it that way: If your GM tells you beforehand that he will change some things that bugger him when run into - that's where i can live with rulings that seem strange. What i can't stand is those people who say that they play by rules and frequently ignore them.

Something else i discovered was this:
In this guys game the keen sword isn't magical. Being asked "why is this" the answer was that "because keen equals a +1 bonus, a +5 sword could be only +4 and keen"...

taken to the extreme this would mean, that every vorpal sword couldn't be magical, since +5 is the highest bonus, right?
So any commoner with a pitchfork could break that vorpal sword, right? Well, mending surely seems to be a powerful spell here...

Dougal

Can you please re-explain why he says keen isn't magical? I might be tired or something but I can't figure his reasoning out.

Re: Agreed.

You know, it's posts like this that tempt the old me to come out and....oh, no....

I hope that's a house rule of his. If not, tell him to calmly step away from the table before he hurts himself. Put those little plastic thingies in all the electrical outlets too, just to be safe. With a guy like this, all he needs is a penny...

...ok. I'm fine now. Well, that wasn't so bad.

Yup, which is the proof in the pudding that he's got his wires crossed somewhere. I don't mind house rules, but I do demand that they make sense. I think your DM needs to work on his explanations and flesh out his house rules a little better.

Yup. Pretty shaky, isn't it?

Maybe he made some of his own errata for the DMG.

"Keen" is described in the MAGIC ITEMS chapter of the DMG, which, clearly, must be a mistake...
