It's not an Orange Julius, because you're missing the raw egg and the vanilla extract.

Add one raw egg and a spoonful of vanilla extract to what you've got. Then mix it in a blender until its all smooth and frothy. That'll get you something a lot closer to what you used to be able to buy in the malls.

Interesting. I was reading some copy-cat sites that claimed the frothiness of the Orange Julius was a trade-secret. :p

Nope... An Orange Julius was really just the Mother of All Fruit Smoothies... Long before there ever were fruit smoothies.

As an expedient, you could probably substitute vanilla yogurt for the vanilla extract and egg and get a lot closer than most of the other copy-cat recipes. Especially so, if you can't bring yourself to drink raw egg.

Do a Google search for "Cincinatti Chili".

It's fairly chili cooked without beans, but with a big spoonful of cinnamon and/or a big spoonful of cocoa powder mixed in. You serve it over spaghetti noodles, with chopped raw onions, kidney beans, shredded cheddar cheese, oyster crackers and hot pepper sauce (Tabasco or the like) on the side as "condiments" that you can layer on top, if you wish.

It's very tastey.

The moment I saw the title of this thread, I immediately thought of Skyline Chili. Dang good stuff.

Some grocery stores around here actually have Skyline Chili in their freezer sections... But it can be awfully hard to find.

I usually just make it homemade. It's good enough for me, but my friend from Ohio always ends up comparing it to Skyline... "It's not quite the same!" :D

Yeah, I immediately thought of Skyline and Cincinatti Chili as well- both of which I think are gross. I like Skyline's buffalo chicken wraps though, it's pretty much the only thing on their menu I like.

As a Cincinnati-area native, it is my regretful duty to inform you that you are a terrible person. When I went back home for Christmas last year, I ate sooo many coneys to make up for lost time. Oh, Los Angeles, you have so many foods - why no Cincy chili?!

That said, I also miss goetta - it's a fried German breakfast meat loaf thing that is apparently non-existent any further than an hour or so away from Cincinnati.

Jewel carried it for a while here in Chicago (I'm guessing that's what you've seen), but I'm not sure it sold well, and I can't remember seeing it recently.

Ed Debevic's* (a mock 1950s diner that is in several locations here in Chicago and elsewhere) offers chili in the same "ways" that Skyline does (on spaghetti, with optional beans, cheese, and/or onions), but it's spicier than Skyline, and I don't think it has the cocoa in it.

(* -- that's where I took MavrickWeirdo on our "date" a few weeks back, but my stomach can't tolerate stuff that spicy anymore.)

Am not! You're correct about Goetta though. There is a restraunt in KY just over the Ohio border that serves it and then one place in Cinci that serves it. I like goetta.
As a Cinci native, I am not surprised you moved to the other side of the country. Why, OH WHY did I leave So Cal to move to SW OHIO!!! You must be the smart one since you did the opposite!

Yeah, there are a few restaurants in the area that serve it. A lot of Perkins restaurants served it, too - I assume they still do. You aren't talking about the Anchor Bar and Grill in Newport, KY, are you? Their goetta is so greasy and delicious...mmm. My mom mailed me a recipe for goetta recently, but I haven't gotten around to whipping up a batch yet.
