Stray puppy (mini-rant)

Sidereal Knight

First Post
As my partner and I prepared to go to work this morning, we found a VERY young male puppy in our driveway. He's a cutie, a mixed-breed with ruddy fur and black highlights on the ears and tail, and he's going to be a BIG dog when he grows up. Very friendly, very much a puppy.

He was damp, but not wet enough to have been out all night during the rain. He had a flea collar, but no tags. A quick trip to our vet revealed what I suspected: no microchip.

Since I was already late for work, I ran home and secured him as best I could in the bathroom. We can't keep him -- we already have 4 cats in a smallish house, and my partner's allergic to dogs -- so I will have to take him to the Humane Society after work.

Now for the rant:

How can anyone be so irresponsible as to let a puppy (no more than 10 weeks old!) get out? I know microchipping is a bit expensive, and it's often done when an animal is neutered, but c'mon! Someone cared enough to get a flea collar... why the heck didn't someone spend $10.00 to buy a real collar and a tag?

There is a special place in Hell for people who mistreat animals.

*deep breath*

Ok, sorry about that.

Anyhow, if anyone can spare a few good thoughts, send them out to this little pup. He's a sweetheart who needs a good home.

If not the majority, then a sizeable minority of folks who get pets put little or no thought into what they really ought to do. They don't consult a veterinarian about the requirements for shots and ongoing medical care, or diet, or anything else. Maybe they talk to a pet store clerk or the breeder (neither of which has any actual training, in general, and both of whom have a vested interest in seeming like they know whereof they speak). They want a pet, they acquire one, and they get a few things from the supermarket to care for it. It's sad.

You could check around your neighborhood. The pup might have darted out when someone opened their door that morning.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. Put a 'Found" poster up at your local convenience store. Hopefully there is a family out there that is sick about their missing puppy.

I've had to go chasing my dog several times when my 5 year old would open the door. Kids. It happens.
