Streamlining Traits

While I see the logic of reducing the breadth of Perception, the fact that a character is good at locating hidden objects seems less than a perfect fit with being a stage magician or pickpocket, and searching a room with DEX seems off.

Not sure I have any better answer, though.

Maybe bundle it with appraise - not a great fit, but at least some link to powers of observation, and to accumulation of wealth.

3E had the Tactile Trapsmith feat to use dex instead of int for searching, so there's precedent for it. Makes at least as much sense as being wis-based. Searching isn't really a perceptive skill, wis has little to do with it, that's more of spot's domain. Searching is more knowing where to look, the ability to find that hidden trigger or notice something off when you're patting someone down. Int might be the best fit, but I can easily see dexterity working for it about as well.

Sleight of Hand isn't just for stealing, it's also the closest skill to "manual dexterity check" that the game has. It seemed like the 2 skills would make sense together. I wouldn't be opposed to search being part of appraise either, though part of the appeal of combining it with sleight of hand was being based on a rogue's best ability score.

I've been toying with the idea of splitting Perception back into Listen and Spot as per 3.5. It's been fairly glaring for me because I'm GMing a game with a blind oracle.

Eh, its just as easy for me to consider, "Make a Perception check" = "Make a listen check, blind guy...".

In our Kaidan game, we play a Bard (moso), which is a blind bard, and this check occurs all the time, with no problem nor confusion.

I'm pretty sure there's already a trait to get Perception as a class skill. If there is, then there's no reason to shy away from offering it yourself.

Absent a trait, you could grab Perception and another INT/WIS/CHA skills as a class skill with the Cosmopolitan feat (and a couple of extra languages as a side benefit).

I have mixed opinions on traits as they are currently implemented. Sometimes they can act to drive my character in unexpected directions.

For example, I was creating a Dawnflower Dervish bard. I took Vagabond child purely because I wanted the character to have disable device.

But I then made that a core part of her background. It caused me to change her to being a Varisian, it seriously affected her personality, etc.

I very much liked the way that trait impacted the character. But it worked precisely because, at that point, I didn't know much about the character (sometimes I start character creation with a concept, sometimes with a picture, sometimes with mechanics)

Other times, I start with a strong character concept and spend far too much time trying to find a trait that both thematically fits the character AND has some useful benefit. There, I'd much rather have the ability to take one of the OP traits and re-fluff it as appropriate.
