Stuck on the Beltway

So I'm on DC's 495 near the drawbridge between VA and MD. Seriously right now. And I'm in the driver's seat. It's 12:30 in the morning, and as I passed the Route 1 exit, a safety truck and state trooper pulled ahead 2 cars in front of me. The road had gradually been coned down to one lane. The safety truck goes about 2 miles an hour blocking off the lane, then stops before the drawbridge. The driver and the state trooper get out and tell us that they're going to recable something and that we'll have to just park and wait on the beltway for at least 25 minutes. There's no way to turn around, and there were no signs notifying a closure.

But apparently this spot on the beltway is home to about 20 wireless internet connections, and as I am on my way home from a D&D game, I have my lap top. So you, dear readers get live coverage as I sit in my car with my boyfriend and wait for them to recable an overpass. It's going to be an exciting time.

So first someone drove up the shoulder to see if he could bypass the traffic, reggae music blaring out of his new Lexus (still has temporary tags). The cops didn't notice. Then he gets out to talk on his cell phone and just walks around on the freeway. Cop notices. Where'd you come from? Why are you half on the shoulder? etc.

So he wants the guy to pull over onto the shoulder to write him up. In the process of pulling over, the guy hits the van in front of us. Then as the cop is writing up the guy, another car tries to pull around on the other side of the cone barricade. The cop then pulls him over onto the other shoulder. Drama ensues. It's now 1:22 am

Sometimes life hands us a situation that is just surreal.

Maybe you guys should make out in the car and totally fog up the windows! Then the cops will have a good story to tell when they get back to the station. ;)

Yes, and give us all the details too.

The DC beltway sucks.

People who think the rules don't apply to them suck.

That is all.

We finally got home at around 2:15. 495 cleared up at about 1:30, but when we got onto 295 a large accident had blocked our direction down to 1 lane.

As for the making out, I didn't have my registration with me and thus didn't want to do anything that the cop could even remotely constue as illegal. The first guy to get pulled over didn't have his registration either and the cop got really mad at him. I figured surfing the internet was safer. Thank goodness my VAIO gets 3 hours of battery life.
