Stunned characters can't act. Can they take AoOs?

What about the second part of my question? Does a stunned character get to resist trips/grapples? I'm not talking about the AoO that is provoked when you attempt these attacks, I'm talking about the opposed roll.

I'm guessing yes. Making an opposed roll is not an action.

I agree. You still get reflex saves and such when you are stunned, for example. Resisting a trip or grapple would fall into the same category.

I agree, grappling or tripping a stunned foe shouldn't be automatic. But it does seem like some sort of penalty would be in order -- it ought to be easier to grab or trip someone when they're stunned than when they're fully alert.

Well, since stunned creatures have -2 to AC and lose Dex bonus to AC, the grappler already gets the benefit of the target losing their Dex bonus against the touch attack to start the grapple.

For resisting grapple/trip attempts, how about a -2 penalty (to be consistent with the AC loss)?

Being stunned is bad enough.

You're -2 to AC and have no Dex bonus, and I think it's been agreed don't get an AoO.

a) It'll be easier to start the Trip attempt against you.

b) It'll be easier to Trip you if your Dex was higher, but no easier if you'd use your Strength to oppose.

This makes sense to me; just because that big burly Orc/ Ogre isn't able to take an action doesn't mean it won't be able to reactively use its brute Strength to remain on its feet.

However, the nimble little Halfling won't be able to dodge out of the way and will have to rely on brute (:)) Stength to stay on its feet.

If you are stunned, then you drop everything you are holding. You don't threaten any squares if you are unarmed (unless you are a monk or have the Improved Unarmed Strike), thus you cannot make AoOs.

... which the original poster pointed out in the very first message of the thread, and why his question was "But what about stunned animals/monks/things that still threaten after they drop whatever they're holding?"

I would assume that "can't take any actions" portion of the stunned condition would indicate that you would not be able to take an AOO. An AOO is considered an attack, even though it comes outside the normal course of actions.

Ack. Serves me right for not reading the first post entirely, I suppose.

My best guess would be not to allow the creature to make attacks of opportunity for no other reason than it fits the mental image better. :)
