Suffocating A Pit Fiend

How did you inflict subdual damage on the pit fiend? Don't you need a +3 weapon to do any damage at all?

Pit fiend may be a bad example because of too many factors (though it still works). Let's use the ubiquitous troll as an example:

The hapless adventurers come upon a troll. They have no fire and acid but they beat it down to subdual so badly all its friends are unconscious.

Can they choke it/drown it/suffocate it? My guess is yes.

They can even drown him BEFORE they beat him unconscious. It's just so much more simple after he stopped to rend.

Of course, it makes no sense that you can chop a pit fiend up into a million pieces

IMO, If you're doing subdual damage to it (per regeneration) you're not cutting anything up (unless you have a vorpal weapon).

And there's another question (which probably has an answer I'm just missing)--would a vorpal weapon even kill something with regeneration? You might cut off its head but it'll just regenerate everything back and get up again.

The reason I am wondering about the suffocation is the sole fact that, if you cut something's head off, it can't breathe anyway. If it has regeneration it will grow back so obviously it doesn't need to breathe. So would suffocating/drowning even kill it?

I'm too lazy to check but IIRC the faq even mentioned coming back form being chopped up. DR can respresent instant heals so no chopping up, regen apparently doesn't. So I can rip a trolls lungs out and run them through a meat grinder and he's fine, shove a pillow over his head and watch out.

I would agree. You can suffocate a creature with regeneration, but it's not a permanent means of killing it.
