Suggestions for Campaign settings?

There's also Iron Kingdoms from Privateer Press, very cool 'higher tech' gritty setting. It's not really steampunk (as it's not Victorian), but it does have steam engines and such.

There's also Kingdoms of Kalamar from Kenzer & Co., which is a very detailed and well done setting too. And it's an official setting and it's got great support.

KoK is a good setting. I have a few of the products. Very well developed and detailed out. Kalamar has more of a low magic feel like a traditional medieval world though.

I guess I'm looking for a kind of mysterious, yet not really horror setting. I want a place that is divided into two sections: the good countries and the evil ones. It would also be great if most of the good countries were up north and the evil ones were down south. The southernmost good countries would probably be battle ravaged from defending against the northernmost evil ones.

Thanks.

My suggestion? Make it up as you go along.

Eberron has more of a "shades of grey" than "good vs. evil," although there is some of that, too.

Forgotten Realms, I believe, is very clear-cut, black'n'white good vs. evil.

Personally, I LOVE Iron Kingdoms, but that's a bit much for someone just starting.

So yeah, making it up as you go along is my favorite. That's what I did for my first campaign.

Sounds like you have a good core idea for your own campaign. I think you would enjoy Eberron while you were creating your own world...it definitely has that mysterious feel. It lacks the G v E idea...but some time spent in Forgotton Realms (where everyone in Shadowdale and Cormyr is good and everyone in Thay and Zhentil Keep is evil--okay not really but those are the trends) would give you and your other gamers some exposure to that.

But creating your own campaign is the best way to get what you want from a world.

Good luck and I'm sure we here at ENWorld would be happy to help you on your way.

Dark Sun is the best for psionics since most of the 2nd ed rules were from that setting.

If you want wars and political intrigue try Birthright (see Birthright.net for some details on it).

No psionics but there are blood abilities and running domains and large scale wars, etc.

Unfortuneately it, like Dark Sun, is one of the settings that WotC no longer supports.

Overall I think your best bet is a home-brew setting but check out the others to get ideas. Athas.org has the 3.5 Dark Sun ruels (for free) and Birthright.net has the ones for Birthright (also free). Both are "official" rule sets in that WotC has given the fan sites the rights to publish "free" "official" material for those settings.

The Gazetteer is for Greyhawk.

Lessee, you want a setting with psionic support, that's mysterious and dualistic? Go get Arcanis. It has everything that you seem to be looking for, except that the evil guys are up north, and everyone's war-ravaged.
