Suggestions for Fey

Munin

First Post
I'm looking to add a bit of fairy mystique to my game. Not the pretty little half-dressed ones that lounge on toadstools and play the flute, mind you, I want something dark and scary. I want fey that the denizens of the campaign world genuinely fear.

If you know of any books you'd recommend, please let me know. Or, tell me what you've done with the mischievous fey in your campaign world.

Thanks!

Van Richten's Guide to the Shadow Fey sounds like it's exactly what you want.

I just got it myself and read it through and I really like it.

Change the alignment of fey to evil and have their pranks be malicious. Improved invisible flying assassin pixies are nasty. Wildwood does that for its setting.

In lots of folklore fey were things to be placated and avoided.

Hmm...good suggestion. The fact that it's written for the Ravenloft setting just makes me happy. Maybe I'll use the Shadow Fey as the basis for my Unseelie Court.

Yes. Hence the leaving out of milk at night and referring to them by a pleasant term like 'fairy'. You know, just in case one is listening in.
That's the kind of mood I'm hoping to create...even for the good fey.

It's the cute half-dressed ones that make the best dark and scary fey. I was DMing a solo game where the 1st level player accepted an invitation by such to join them in their dance. He woke up only to find out he'd been dancing for a year and a day.

There was a really good thread about such back a year or so if somebody could search for it. Old fairy tale stuff like the head in the well that wants it's hair combed.

Simply brilliant.

Yes, if someone could dig that old thread up that would be great. The bit about the head in the well is just creepy....

monster manual3 actually has a number of fey. I also took several plant creatures (battle briar, thorn waif, dread blossom) and declared them to be fey.
