Nothing, actually. I think the Invisibles are swell. Of course, Grant Morrison also was quoted as saying that he considered the matrix enough of a ripoff of 'The Invisibles' that he considered legal action. I think he was a bit off of his rocker, but YMMV.

Actually, the Invisibles is a dead on comparison, because in the Invisibles the action takes place in a laboratory where AIDS was bioengineered, and in the X-Men it has Wolverine and the gang storming into the secret conspiracies laboratory, seeking a cure for the legacy virus.

Is this a spoiler for the new movie? If so, how about a warning?
I think what appears on paper is a pretty clear indication of what will appear onscreen, though. I mean, a solid script is pretty obvious. If you were to take Fritz Lang's "M" and compare it to another artsy flick like "The Ice Storm" it's pretty obvious which one will come out on top.
We must not agree on the definition of the word 'obvious', then, as tastes vary. I'm honestly not sure which one you're recommending, especially since you use the appelation 'artsy'. 'M' is also a bad example, as it's back to that two factors: Fritz Lang wrote and directed it (there's that auteur factor again), and Peter Lorre's stunning performance. But that doesn't mean I could watch the film that often.
And I would argue that the source material is immediately transmuted by work done by anyone other than the original author. Take a look at Superman, Batman, and even the X-Men. They've gone through so many different treatments that they've been effectively bastardized if you compare them to the original material.
When you enjoyed the X-Men, was the original Stan Lee? Or was it another author? And do you despise the current story arc of the X-Men?
I'd agree. But that's really not relevant to keeping to the spirit of the work. As for my preferences, they'd be for most of the X-men's run. My favorite works are Lee/Kirby and Claremont/Byrne/Austin...but they are the defining works of those characters. The concepts stayed the same throughout it's run, even if the writers sometimes lost their way.
The reason I enjoyed the X-men movie was that it captured the ideas, concepts and natures of the characters. Staying faithful to the original story is foolish, as the format of a monthly serial comic does NOT make for a good movie. Using it as a springboard, however, is another matter.
And for the record, my favorite Green Lantern is John Stewart.
