Summer Flicks!

All you have to is look around boards like these to find MATRIX hate. It seems anytime someone posts a pro matrix topic someone has to show up and start bashing. It sucks, so yeah there is a backlash. Most notably "It's not as smart as it thinks it is" and " Dark City was better". Hell people were saying this after a few weeks of THE MATRIX inital theatrical run.

Sheesh. 'Dark City was better' is hardly Matrix hate. I preferred Dark City myself, and did think Matrix's trumpeted originality was exaggerated...it reminded me of quite a bit anime and HK cinema.

That said, I did like it...I own the DVD and will be there opening night for the sequals.

Hey, what you got against the Invisibles, bub?

Nothing, actually. I think the Invisibles are swell. Of course, Grant Morrison also was quoted as saying that he considered the matrix enough of a ripoff of 'The Invisibles' that he considered legal action. I think he was a bit off of his rocker, but YMMV.

Not necessarily about sticking it to the man either, never said they were doing battle with the government, interesting that you associate darks things in mans heart with it though. Gives an old gamer some hope...

I have no idea what you just said. Which is apt in a discussion about The Invisibles, I guess.

Actually, the Invisibles is a dead on comparison, because in the Invisibles the action takes place in a laboratory where AIDS was bioengineered, and in the X-Men it has Wolverine and the gang storming into the secret conspiracies laboratory, seeking a cure for the legacy virus.

Never noticed that before. Thanks.

Is this a spoiler for the new movie? If so, how about a warning?

I think what appears on paper is a pretty clear indication of what will appear onscreen, though. I mean, a solid script is pretty obvious. If you were to take Fritz Lang's "M" and compare it to another artsy flick like "The Ice Storm" it's pretty obvious which one will come out on top.

We must not agree on the definition of the word 'obvious', then, as tastes vary. I'm honestly not sure which one you're recommending, especially since you use the appelation 'artsy'. 'M' is also a bad example, as it's back to that two factors: Fritz Lang wrote and directed it (there's that auteur factor again), and Peter Lorre's stunning performance. But that doesn't mean I could watch the film that often.

And I would argue that the source material is immediately transmuted by work done by anyone other than the original author. Take a look at Superman, Batman, and even the X-Men. They've gone through so many different treatments that they've been effectively bastardized if you compare them to the original material.

When you enjoyed the X-Men, was the original Stan Lee? Or was it another author? And do you despise the current story arc of the X-Men?

I'd agree. But that's really not relevant to keeping to the spirit of the work. As for my preferences, they'd be for most of the X-men's run. My favorite works are Lee/Kirby and Claremont/Byrne/Austin...but they are the defining works of those characters. The concepts stayed the same throughout it's run, even if the writers sometimes lost their way.

The reason I enjoyed the X-men movie was that it captured the ideas, concepts and natures of the characters. Staying faithful to the original story is foolish, as the format of a monthly serial comic does NOT make for a good movie. Using it as a springboard, however, is another matter.

And for the record, my favorite Green Lantern is John Stewart. :D

Hmm, Dark Ciy's originality wasn't why it was good, it was it's execution and it's feel. What animes and other movies are like Dark City? I am curious. Were they as good? Similar?

Sorry, WizardDru, reading one of my posts is like digging through... something really confusing.

Anyhoo, I was just making a reference to Michael Chabon's treatment for X-Men when I mentioned the attack on the legacy virus lab. Has nothing to do with the new movie. I just wasn't very clear.

Yeah, I'll agree with that. But Lang's ex-wife wrote the script for both Metropolis and M. I think her story, combined with Fritz Lang's beautiful visuals really made them both solid films. I think I kept the comparison with Ice Storm intentionally vague to try and confuse anyone who disagreed with me into submission.
:D

And John Stewart roxxors.

of the top of my head, here are my opinions:

Lain
Berserk (maybe, just the whole "dark" feel of it)
Boogie Pop Phantom (only saw part of the first ep)
Blood, the Last Vampire

that's all i can think of for now

Whoops...I wasn't clear there at all. My statement regard originality was regarding Matrix and not Dark City. I remember hearing Bruckheimer claiming its the most original thing you'll ever see, and then coming back from seeing it thinking it was a live-action anime.

Ah, fair enough. That I can understand. It did feel like an anime (even though I haven't seen all that many). I was kinda hoping for a few leads on some hiden gems that I have never heard of. Carry on. ;)

For some reason, I suddenly have an irresistable urge to go watch "Mr. Vampire". Go figure. :)

Jersey Girl

When's Jersey Girl supposed to come out? I'm a big Kevin Smith fan too, and I'm really looking forward to this movie, but I haven't heard much about it in quite some time.

Back to the general topic: I'm interested in the popular summer flicks, all of which have ben mentioned above.
