Summon Monster 6 - strange choices

The most recent Dragon Magazine had a good article on adding monsters to the list. If I ever gte a chance to play a summoner, I'll use it. But since it seems I always DM, it'll be a while before that happens.

Of course, a casting time of one full round really ruins the summon monster spells. I'm hoping the revised PH changes that, although I doubt it will.

The article on the Summoners in the latest Dragon is now a valuble asset to my roleplaying arsenal. I have a cleric in one of my games that has already stated that she will be trying the expanded lists in the magazine. I think that you should get the magazine, and try those out for size.

The Dragon article is the best thing they have published in awhile. If they were smart this would be added to the Summon Monster spell in RPHB 3.1. Throw out the moster list and just use the simple rules from the article. This gives you far greater selection while making things more fair by properly placing things like the Celestial Dire Bear.

[Edit, you might want to wait for RMM 3.1 to get the proper CR for some things as well]

I allow a character to theme their monster summoning by replacing the templates that creatures have with any of the alignment / element templates (thank you manual of the planes!). So a fire themed sorcerer could summon a fire element dire bear instead of a celestial one. I feel that customising the list of creatures is a great way of adding flavour to a character.

I agree.

Keep the flavor in the game.

I do this too but only allow some of the templates. I let the character pick one BASE template that he can summon any creature with and then they can choose between the other templates for specific animals.
