Summon Monster SPells

I am sure this has been beat to death before but I can't find or remember a similar thread.

Has anyone modified the summon monster spells?

A player in my group wants to be able to apply the alignment templates to all the monsters (fiendish, celstial, axiomatic, anarchistic) on the chart.

He also thinks the "elemental" templates should be applied as well (water, air, etc).

THis way you would be able to summon a "fire" rat, "Celestial" Rat or "Fiendish" rat depending on the casters alignment.

ALL sugestions are welcome,

I'd say, if he wants to summon creatures with the elemental template then you should make a series of Summon Elemental Ally spells, that are exactly like Summon Monster except that they get him the elemental template instead of a fiendish/celestial one. Let's not stretch the versatility of the normal Summon Monster too far.

I don't see anything wrong with summoning, say, a celestial dire weasel instead of a fiendish one. You could say the same for summoning an axiomatic or anarchic variant.

However, "the fiendish dire weasels" is STILL the best name for a rock band, out of the four.

I think I agree with everyone on the "alignment" template, as in I don't see a problem with that .

What are your collective feelings about adding the "elemental" templates in MotP?

I thought the rock band name was Screaming Dire Weasels!

I allow players to freely choose from any of these templates...

Celestial, Fiendish, Shadow, Element (choose 1), Axiomatic, & Anarchic.

Adds alot of flavor I think.

Also, I know alot of others wouldnt like to go this route, but I allow druids to summon creatures with the Element and Wood templates.

Can they choose from ANY of these or do they have choose one? I would let a LG caster to summon Celestial and Axiomatic but not the other two "alignment" ones.

Can your guys summon any element or do they choose one and keep that always?

The specific situation I am in now is that there is a LN Priest of Death wanting to apply these templates. The axiomatic is a perfect fit but I am having a hard time justifing the "elemental" templates. Maybe "cold" that has a lot to do with death.

Where is the Shadow template? what alignment is that asscoiated with?

I use the elemental templates, the alignment templates (ONLY if it matches their alignment ie Chaotic uses chaotic, Lawful uses Axiomatic, Celestial is good, fiendish is evil), Wood and Shadow (along with paraelemntal templates) from Manual of the Planes.

Their powers are based on HD. Low level summon monsters are still weak using just firendish or celestial. If im RPing a fire mage, then i would like to have fire templated instead of celestial templated.

I use them as a DM and it balances JUST fine

Uh, now this makes perfect sense to me. If I am playing a "FIRE"mage (or cleric) I would want to summon fire dire weasils too. But, should a non-fire Mage or cleric be able to summon an fire animal?

Being able to summon your "speciality" makes sense to me. Being able to summon any template does not.

I think you should get one template per character that you can apply to any animal on the list. Not a choice of templates.

AM I being to restrictive of a DM?

I think I have finally figured out how to word the question I want answered! Only my fourth try!
