Summoning monsters and spell duration

A summoned monster disappears at the end of its spell duration. Would it still disappear if it was killed before the end of the duration? Would it disappear immediately, or at the end of the duration?

I've always had the body of a slain summoned creature remain until the spell's duration lapsed.

PH p. 157, under "Summoning": "A summoned creature also goes away if it is killed or dropped to 0 hit points."

In this context, the preceding clearly means that the monster disappears immediately.
