Superhero Powers

Some help here folks.

My son has gotten into the Marvel Superhero Squad toys of late. And he keeps asking me hwt they can do. Now I know the basics, but it's been a long time since I looked at a comic book. So how about a run down of basic powers. Keep in mind my son is 6, so relative is good. ie My son wants to know is so-and-so is fast, but is he faster than him, but not as fast as Flash etc.

Right now he has:
Angel
Cyclops
Magneto
Colussus
Hawkeye
Captain America

But more are coming so feel free to add.

Thanks for your help.

Off the top of my head:

Angel flies. Um... at least at one time he had metal wings that I seem to recall being razor-sharp and capable of shooting the 'feathers,' but I could be mixing him with someone else. I mostly know the X-Men from one of the cartoons and the movies.

Cyclops shoots beams beams of energy from his eyes. At full power, he can destroy a building-sized combat robot in a single blast. As long as his eyes are open, he will unleash this beam of energy, so he has to wear a special vizor to regulate it. This also allows him to see without destroying whatever he's looking at, and also, IIRC, lets him control the beam better, adjusting its radius and power level. Beyond that, he's the usual team leader of the X-Men (not a power so much as a personality trait), and he has amazing luck with women (also probably not a power, but who knows).

Magneto is a villain (usually) and a mutant, probably one of the most powerful in the Marvel universe. He has almost total control over magnetism, and his aptitude with this ability goes way beyond pseudo-telekinesis that only works on metal. He can control one of the four fundamental physical forces and is smart enough to use that ability in creative ways. There aren't many abilities Magneto *doesn't* have - IIRC, he can even do a limited form of mind control by manipulating electrons in the subject's brain! At the very least he can paralyze anyone, lift any metal object through pseudo-telekinesis, cause certain chemical reactions remotely, disrupt or strengthen electricity, and interact with electronics remotely. Magneto believes mutants should be ruling humans rather than cooperating with or being slaughtered by them; he espouses this position as leader of the Brotherhood, a group of like-minded mutants. However, Magneto has been on the side of the angels when it suits his purposes, and even led the X-Men for a while!

Colossus can turn his body into a metallic substance. This gives him super strength and, in particular, super resilience. He's a member of the X-Men.

Hawkeye flies. And, and, he led the Defenders! :D

Captain America is a World War 2 soldier who was enhanced with 'super-soldier serum' to, IIRC, save him from injury and allow him to return to the fight against the Nazis. Probably the best way to think of him is as a 'perfect human' - in D&D terms, a character with 18s in every stat. He's technically not 'super' in that he can't do anything a normal human couldn't do, if that normal human were at the peak of physical and mental suitability for the task. His weapon is a shield, which he can throw like a boomerang or use to great effect in melee; he also has a mean right hook. Personality-wise, he's the avatar of all that's best in the American ideal. He's known as the best tactician and most inspiring leader among Marvel heroes (remember, ALL 18s, including Cha and Int ;)) and normally leads the Avengers, Earth's premier super team.

Angel

- Basically a very athletic human with wings. Post-Apocalypse modifications give him ability to shoot razors from his wings and increase his speed/strength/durability.

Cyclops

- Basically a very athletic human who shoots laser beams out of his head! Eyes, specifically. With his visor he can dial the intensity up and down, focus the beam or widen it, and basically control it. Without the visor he uncontrollably emits max power beams until he shuts his eyes.

Magneto

- Basically a very athletic human (fairly old though) who has -absolute control- of magnetism. If it can be done with magnets, he can do it (eg - levitating the Golden Gate Bridge). If it can be hazily LINKED to magnets, he can do it (eg - throwing people around via "the iron in their blood").

Colussus

- In his flesh form he's a VERY athletic human. Has power to transmute his body into "organic steel," which makes him all but indestructible (I think only Juggernaut would be considered more durable than Colossus in steel form, in the Marvelverse), and magnifies his strength to superhuman levels (probably the most physically strong of the X-men).

Hawkeye

- Basically a very athletic human with supernormal accuracy and bowmanship skills. Minor gadgeteer. Not...much...more, really. He's Marvel's version of Green Arrow.

Captain America

- Minor superhuman strength, speed, precision, and durability (on par with Spiderman, probably a little stronger and tougher, but not as quick). Possesses a shield made of adamantium, which is essentially indestructible to any force. Uses it defensively to block attacks, and offensively as a thrown weapon which returns to him.

Based on the game mechancis, most DC characters are about 10x the power of most Marvel characters. Marvel tries to keep its super-reality closer to reality than DC does. DC just accepts that supers alter everthing and let it go at that.

Going by what the comics have said about the characters Flash is faster than Quicksilver; Superman is stronger than anyone that is not a god and Batman is cooler and has more issues than most of the Marvel Universe, Spidey included. :)

Oh, Captain America recently slain for no good reason story or character wise.

I thought his shield was made of Vibranium - an adamantium alloy that actually gets stronger the more it vibrates (ie from being hit). I could be wrong...

You're correct. It absorbs kinetic energy and from what I remember, actually ends up being stronger than Adamantium.

As for powers...Archangel is the one who shot metal stuff when Apocalypse got a hold of him. Regular old Angel(the best of the X-Men, by the way) can fly, obviously, has moderate super strength, and recently developed a healing power.

I think the shield is a vibranium/adamantium alloy. Not that the OPs son is likely to care. :D
