Superman Sequel confirmed: Singer to Direct

"I will probably take the characters as they’ve been established in SUPERMAN RETURNS and move from there," Singer says. "But this will be the starting place, kind of like X-MEN 1. I had to find a place to begin to educate people who weren’t familiar with that universe and here there is a whole generation not familiar with Superman, and there is a lot of value to having them return to the Donner universe and continue forward. It was always a delicate balance, particularly the character this steeped in history and ubiquitous because he means so much to so many people all over the world."

Singer also adds, "And now that the characters are established, I’d like to take it as an opportunity to bring in perhaps a more threatening, foreboding element."

Could this mean Brainiac might be on tap as a super-villain in the next film?

"We were talking about that," he reveals. "We were having a Brainiac conversation, but I don’t know."

I'd like to see a little less Donner and a little more Singer. Returns felt more like a reimagining of Superman 1 than it's own movie.

Braniac is the only logical choice for the next movie IMO. It can even build on Returns by having a machine intelligence discover the Kryptonite asteroid that Supes threw into space. The intelligence then finds the remaining Kryptonian crystals and meld with them. There's Braniac.

Good news on the green light. I'm really looking forward to Singer making good on the promise in Returns.

That sucks. Too bad they didn't go with a different direction. SR is way too much Donner hommage and not enough enjoyable movie. To be honest with the plot stuff from SR I'm not at all interested in the sequal. Ooo we can watch the domestic trials and tribulations of Superman and his

Singer went from a guy who I would say, "He knows how to capture comics on film!" to "oh god I hope they get a new director". I was hoping the "Superflop" would move the studio in that direction.

like that idea. My only fear is that the kid is going to play prominantly I bet in this next sequal. I bet at some poitn the kid gets kidnapped.

Yeah, I think it was a huge mistake to do it as a sequel to the Donner films. I haven't seen it, but from what I've read, it's just drowning in nostalgia without adding anything new to the mythos. The Silver/Bronze Age version of Superman is easily my least favorite. I would much rather it have been a new "don't look back" origin, like Man of Steel or Birthright.

Glad to hear that they're using other members of Superman's rogues gallery, though.

I saw where he is doing some self promo work and that, yes, but nothing from WB. Sure, he is directing but that may be in his contract. I just think he is trying to make it happen, not that it will happen, just spin. All he confirmed was that 2009 is the target release and he will direct, what is he leaving out? If it makes 200 mill domestic, if they can make it for less than 150 mill?
