Superman Sequel confirmed: Singer to Direct

I do not want to see Lex Luthor again. Frankly that was the weakest part of Superman Returns, the idiotic plan and the constant homage to the Donner films. The Donner films were lovingly self mocking. They showed the ridiculousness, the dated tropes of Superman, and the Lex Luthor of those movies, played brillantly by Gene Hackman works.

Singer tries to bring a realism to the film, in terms of visual effects, and the menance of the portrayal by Spacey, but ties it to a goofy juevenille comic book "dastardly plan". If Luthor is a villain in the next movie I will honestly consider not seeing it. He is done and tired, Singer made his bed, and I do not want to sleep in it.

Brainiac sounds like it would be brillant. In the old WB cartoon did Brainiac not tempt Superman with his supposed absolute knowledge of Krypton? Seems like the perfect hook, as Singer has already established Superman as longing to know more of his origins.

Brainiac, Yes, Lex Lethor NO!

Yep. Nice post. Brainiac is a perfect movie villian. He would have all these huge robots for Superman to fight and in the process level Metropolis like he always does in the comics. All the while he is tempting Supes with his knowledge of Krypton!

While movie studios would love the added credibility of praises from movie audience ... if only to repeat what they say in front of a promo trailer camera ... as well as having a film win some prestigious award, the bottom line is, "I invested in the film, now I want a return."
Ah, but the article points out that despite it's superior box-office numbers, X3 is most likely the end of a franchise. Also, the Superman/Singer deal had some benefits for the studio besides getting him to do more sequels.

With the way the story goes on The Last Stand, I'm inclined to agree which kinda left me empy and disappointed with a bitter-not-sweet taste.. I can accept the ressurrection of Jean Grey, even though she died again. What I probably cannot accept -- on film -- are the resurrection of Xavier and Summers, who shouldn't die in the first place and I have to criticized Ratner for underusing him less so than Singer underused him in X2. In comic-book pages, I can but not on the silver screen.

As for Superman Returns, I thought Lex Luthor is Kal's nemesis as Joker is to Batman's. Is it Singer's portrayal of Lex leaves you all bitter?

The problem with Cyclops all over the X-Men franchise is that they gave his juicy bits to Wolverine (specially in X3). Cyclops is the Aragorn, the Henry V. He's the stoic leader that even bad boy Wolverine would follow into the breach. He's the one to make the speeches, he's the one who loses the most due to their cause (Jean in X2), and still he comes back fighting. By having Wolverine be the leader, they made Cyclops redundant. And don't get me started on the "Bye Bye Bye" scene on X2. If anything, Cyclops' CD player should be playing Johnny Cash' "Walk the Line".

And the studios want to make a Wolverine spin-off. Kinda hard to follow a story now that he's in charge of Xavier's Academy (well, a 50-50 responsibility with Storm). It's bad enough that Singer underused Cyclops but for Rattner to kill Cyclops off, that's wrong.
