Sure Strike & Power Attack

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it anywhere so:

Do they cancel each other? If I used Sure Strike with the Power Attack feat would I essentially make a STR vs. AC attack and get the +2 or 3 to damage?

Well, they work together quite nicely, yes. :)

If by "nicely" I mean "do equal or less damage than a regular attack, assuming you have a 16 or greater Strength". :)

Cheers!

Yeah, Reaping Strike without Power Attack > Sure Strike with it.

Sure Strike and Careful Attack both just kinda lack something. Maybe if they counted as basic attacks.

Power attack and minion smashing are the only reasons to take either at will at the moment. Not good reasons though.

Need really need something.

I can't see any reason for a ranger to take Careful Attack, but Sure Strike has at least one use: If you also have Heavy Blade Opportunity (not too unlikely, since heavy blades are sure to be a popular choice), Sure Strike is a good way to help make sure you hit with your opportunity attacks to trigger the stop-movement effect.

And for fighters, Sure Strike is the best anti-minion option, since they don't have an alternative like Twin Strike.

You can't use a power on an OA.

And cleave is far better than sure strike at killing minions, the fighter is guaranteed to kill one of the two minions he's attacking, and will likely kill the other.

I'd figure Cleave to be the best anti-minion option. Two kills for one (successful) attack. Not quite as hot as Twin Strike, but useful nonetheless.

Also, it seems to me as if Sure Strike with Power Attack is pretty on par with Reaping Strike. Reaping Strike is a bit more more damage on a miss when you have higher strength, but higher strength also means you should be missing less. Sure Strike also gives you the versatility to choose between damage (via Power Attack) and having a bonus to hit against high-AC enemies.

Cleave doesn't guarantee that you'll kill one of the two minions you're attacking; the extra damage to the second target only happens on a hit. It's all or nothing.

Careful Strike has really no use. But feats like Heavy Blade Opportunity, Hammer Rhythm, Scimitar Dance, and Power Attack make Sure Strike pretty good, especially for a weapon and shield fighter.

Scimatar Dance, Heavy Blade Opportunity, and Power attack on a scimitar and shield fighter turns an OA to:

Attack: Str vs AC
Hit: 1W+4
Miss: Dex
