My first character was simply a high elf rogue (arcane trickster) and I was shocked at how effective it was. Stealth Expertise + longbow is really amazing damage, shield is such a good spell that it alone is worth the price of admission, utility spells like minor illusion and disguise self and mage hand and invisibility payed off many times, and at low levels, sleep is pretty good. On top of all that, Cunning Action, and more skills than most characters (Perception from elf and 2 good skills from rogue). Unfortunately, my character was so awesome that it just wasn't fun any more. Combats would become repetitive, as I'd basically just pop up and obliterate an enemy every round. The only real strategic decision-making was choosing which hapless ally I'd pull out of the fire that round.
