And yes I agree that the new version can and should be better. But the "no sell all damage thanks to the overcoat of temp hp" gimmick can die in a fire.

I'm curious as to the hate for what is, in effect, an ablative armour method of tanking. I like it, because low AC very high HP is a different tanking style than any other class in the game, and creates kind of a fun dynamic where the druid is just getting chewed on but keeps going. It's just not tuned right at low levels. But this new version sucks at basically every level.

We also get +1d8 per round that grows to +2d8 per round and then an extra 1d10 per attack at level 15 so our damage output is in a good place

Oh, it's really, really not. It's terrible.
