What is the counter-cultural choice when it comes to plant based monsters?

Things that aren't plants or really monsters, I guess. A CR 0 mushroom that screams and does nothing else is basically neither a plant, nor a monster in any real sense. So I want to know what makes them so popular. I'm willing to be converted to the church of the loud fungi.

When you think "D&D Plant Monster," why does your mind go to that, over a treant, or wood woad, or shambling mound? That's what I'm curious about.
