Voted Monk for the same reason CanadienneBacon did. But it could easily have gone differently. Haven't played 5E, otherwise it might have been Ranger. And D&D has never done a Cleric of a god(dess) of magic right. Sorcerer and Warlock each have their problems too, IMO.

A side effect of watching "Martin" in the 90s is I just say "Shanaynay" when I see that druid thing, whatever it is supposed to be. A side effect of playing WoW for a decade is I can't imagine playing a Druid unless I could turn into a bear and... avoid owls I guess because, that kind of kink it just wrong... (but it made for a great moment in an old game when our groups Int 8, Wis 8 Barbarian saw his first Owlbear...)

That said, I voted for "Wizard" because it just seems like WotC is slowly trying to replace them with every other magic-user it can come up with, but is afraid to pull the trigger on it... I say... get it over with, or stop trying and finally accept them. Since I don't see Sorcerer, Warlock, and whatever else they will come up with this edition going away... I'm just going to say "enough already and admit you don't like Wizard".

I don't mind Wizards... I just think WotC needs to make a choice here and stop it with trying to subtlety tell us not to play them, over and over again...

I woulda been more than happy to select Barbarians, but you only let us pick one...and let's face it, the Sorcerers are just awful.

An awful unnecessary concept built around an awful unnecessary mechanics so that WotC could say, "Lookit see what WE did! It's OUR game now and we made THIS! Nuh uh, they're not the same thing! They're mooooar magicky than the magicky guys...they don't need to know how to read! Kewl, right?"

If we'd gotten, say, a "pick your top 3", it woulda been 1) Sorcerer, 2) Barbarian (a 1e version, fine, not a "3e-anyone can get angry and now I have superpowers" version. Halflings as barbarians. feh. LUNACY!)

annnnd 3)...<shrug> Monk, I guess. I never even really remember they're in the game because, seriously, I have never seen one in play...like, ever. Fought the two in the Slaver's modules back in the day. That was it. So they're just kinda...non-existant far as I'm concerned anyway. So if I needed a third, to get rid of them.

But I TOOOOTALLY would've voted for a barbarian if I could have.

Aww... I like them all! Well, I guess I just have to pick one, it is the will of the poll. Know who's getting off too easily? Barbarians. They can go. It's the only class I can't get excited about if I imagine playing one. I'm not scared, it's not like they can read any of this thread anyway.

...crap, they're not illiterate anymore, are they?

I voted monk, for the reasons stated above, and because I have to choose only one. If I could choose two, I'd instead choose Ranger and Paladin and make them both Fighter subclasses.

First of all my vote, I say wizard should go, it is such a limited concept. A well done sorcerer would make wizards redundant. i really hate how the designers of every edition lavish it with fun toys and stretch it so far to the point they break suspension of disbelief. and in real life there is no such a thing as a learned spellcaster, everything is inborn talent or dealing with the devil. :)

And the Warlock and the Sorcer....o.....e.....u....o....er, combined, tell us one thing- what ever happened to the Magic User?

It was never the generic spellcaster it was supposed to be....

I like the warlock, but I see the arguments that it's not distinct enough from the sorcerer. However, my instinct would be to roll it the other way and create dragon-blood warlocks and chaos warlocks and remove the sorcerer. In 3.X it was an experiment in a different way to Wizard. Now with the changes to spell preparation and slots, I feel like the sorcerer isn't as necessary, and the two sub-classes feel very specific, with no such thing as a "generic" sorcerer.

is the wizard that should die.

I woulda been more than happy to select Barbarians, but you only let us pick one...and let's face it, the Sorcerers are just awful.

Actually the opposite, the designers can't let go of the wizard and put subtle things to discourage you from playing anything else. Going from the playtest, sorcerer, turn into a mosnter, warlock grow old and ugly, psion sorry mystic scarred by the horrors of the far realm....You play either a wizard or you are a deformed ugly insane freak of nature. Be a disgusting monster or play a wizard!
