My first experience with Baldurs Gate was creating a character, and leaving Candlekeep, only to be randomly waylaid by enemies (hobgoblins) and murderered. Upon reloading I avoided the hobgoblins, and made my way to the nearest town with a lot of trial and error. Upon setting foot in town, a wizard immediately murderered me by hurling spells at me. It was way too tough of an encounter for a first level character.

This was pretty my experience of the whole game. Lots of reloading and trial and error. While I do have some fond memories of the story and the cut scenes, the game play left A LOT to be desired.

1) Welcome to 2nd edition (it's slightly less lethal than 1st)!
2) If you follow the road, you should pick up some (rather unsavoury) allies before you meet any random encounters.
3) There are plot reasons for those difficult bandit encounters, but the EE did reduce their difficulty and frequency a little. Still, they way to handle them at 1st level is simple: run away!
4) The trick to dealing with wizards in 2nd edition is to interrupt their spellcasting. Bows, and the wand of Magic Missiles you get at the start, are useful for this. Running away works here too - the local guards are on your side.
5) As with many D&D CRPGs, you have an easier time if you play a fighter on your first playthrough.
