Sustain Provokes?

oldbone

First Post
Example:
Summons of Khirad, 9th level daily Warlock
Since the power is listed as "Ranged 10", you will provoke when you fist use the spell from all adjacent enemies.
What about when you sustain the power? Do you provoke then too?

Thanks!

In this case, the Sustain is an attack, so yes. If it wasn't an attack, then it wouldn't.

The OA comes from using a power; it's the Use a Power action that provokes.

Summons of Khirad is a daily power, and we know that "Once you use a daily power, you need to take an extended rest before you can use it again."

So in round 1, the Warlock takes the Use a Power action to use the Summons of Khirad daily power (provoking an OA). He has used the power; he needs to take an extended rest before you can use it again.

In round 2, he takes a minor action to Sustain the power. He can't be taking the Use a Power action to use the daily power, since he can't use that power again until he takes an extended rest; so the minor action he's taking to Sustain the power must be an action that is not Use a Power, so he does not provoke an OA.

Sustain is an action that does not explicitly provoke an attack of opportunity in and of itself, and is not the same as using a power.

Opportunity Attacks are triggered by using a power that has either the ranged or area attack types. (This does not have to be an attack power or involve an attack)

Neither of these say you get OA'd for sustaining a power, and without the exception, the general rule (No one can attack on another's turn) applies.

Casting the spell involves movement and concentration, enabling a enemy to hit you.

While sustaining the power, it only involves keeping the energy flowing to the accomplished spell. (eyes glowing, murmuring the spell, etc..) but the warlock/wizard can concentrate or move, so evading attacks if possible.
