SW3: A thought about General Grievious

Dark Psion

First Post
Now that I have seen Star Wars III, I was wondering, should General Grievious have been Darth Maul?

Darth Maul did have more "attached" body parts when we last saw him than Grievious does now. But more importantly, it would set up a rematch between Obi-wan and Maul.

The lack of power could be explained due the the lack of body parts. The Visual Dictonary of SW3 says Darth Vader cannot do Force Lightning because he has no living limbs, so a Maul that is mostly organs in a bag, would have limited force powers.

It would have made the battle between them much more personal, especially since they deleted the death of Jedi Shaak Ti at Grievious's hands.

It would also have tempted Obi-wan to the Dark side, and that would have created a contrast as he overcome the tempation, but Anakin sucumbs to the temptation.

Nah.

It's...unlikely...that he'd've survived a fall after having been cut in half. Certainly, Sidious wouldn't've been able to get to him in time to try and help.

Maul was just a weapon. He wasn't trained to be anything more than that, and he did his job well enough by strengthening the conlifct and not letting it go away(involving the Jedi due to a Sith being noticed). Whether he lived or not didn't really matter.

Grievous, on the other hand, was not a weapon. He was, in fact, a military leader. Yes, he was a coward, but he was a very intelligent tactician and just the kind of leader that the Separatists needed heading the war.

So, from a strictly story view of things, putting Maul in really wouldn't make all that much sense beyond the cool factor. Besides, Obi-Wan doesn't need to be tempted to the Dark Side. That would just distract from Anakin, who is the central focus of EpIII and needed to remain that way. Maul would have taken away from that way too much...and anyway, Maul is overrated.

There is a comic book Star Wars story in which Darth Maul makes a return, and is all cybered up. Though it's non-canonical, just like Boba Fett surviving that worm thing and making a return.

I thought Boba Fett's survival was part of the Expanded Universe, whereas the return of Maul was part of Star Wars Infinities?

According to some EU sources, Greivous doesn't have a connection to Maul, but he does have a connection to another character - none other than the mysterious Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas.

Geonosian scientists implanted Grievous' brain, eyes, and vital organs into a duranium alloy body reminiscent of a Krath War Droid. In addition the Geonosians also altered his mentality and memories to make him more violent and vengeful. His blood was completely replaced by Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas' on order of Count Dooku.

I don't have much to add other than "ditto" on the spoilerize request. And that Obi-Wan's line after he shoots Greivous is priceless. ("So uncivilized!")
