Swamp Trek III: The Search for Ter-raen

OOC: They're 5 ft squares. I see no reason why the charge wouldn't be possible. -4 PA gives +8 bonus to damage 2-handed, so total damage is 39. That's... nothing short of a miracle.

Gildrim belatedly recovers from his surprise and hurries to Karl's side [L5].

Round 1

As Karl lies bleeding helplessly in the ankheg's jaws, Richard hurls aside his crossbow. With a roar of challenge, he charges and swings his sword two-handed, with all his might behind the blow. Fortune smiles on him, and the blade bites deep just between plates of the monster's armored thorax, nearly separating its head from its body. The serrated jaws fall away from Karl, and the headless body thrashes its death throes in a fountain of steaming black ichor.

Weel approaches more cautiously, readying himself to heal Karl. As he comes near, though, another ankheg bursts through the soil, its jaws reaching for Richard's exposed leg. Its lunge is miscalculated, though, and the jaws snap shut well short of the target.

Gildrim...

[sblock=ooc]Richard's charge is perfectly valid, and the confirmed crit kills the ankheg.

Weel moves to H5.

Ankheg 2 bursts up and attacks Richard: 1d20+7+2=11 misses badly.

Gildrim... may wish to change his action, given the new circumstances.

Gildrim, AC 17 (charge), 34/34

OOC: indeed! That'll teach people to roll crits in the nick of time.

Gildrim, after too long a moment looking from Weel to Karl to the spectacular demise of the huge beast, gives an incoherent growl and follows Richard's example, charging at the newcomer and slashing it.[sblock=OOC]1d20+8+2=26; 2d6+5=12[/sblock]

on Karl's inititive, he will bleed ruthlessly upon the ankheg!

[sblock=Trouvere] sorry for the mix-up. I have been reading the escapades of Kelder and Tommy (ok, tarag too) for such a long time, i guess I got the two people mixed up.

By the by, ol' chap, what might you know of the "dr. Who and the water of mars"?[/sblock]

Weel Naxel, human cleric

Weel's draw drops at the single blow that fells the creature, but even as he begins to give thanks, the second burst to the surface. He realizes with a shudder that they have no idea how many more might be waiting, but steels himself and rushes to Karl, touching him as he mutters a brief prayer to Phyrah. A momentary glow surrounds his fallen comrade, and the vicious wounds ... well, they're still rather vicious, though they do appear to have stopped bleeding.

[sblock=OOC]Move to L4 and cast CLW on Karl.

IC still seems to be down. I used the WOTC roller Richard mentioned, and got the following on the CLW roll:

Roll(1d8)+1:
4,+1
Total:5

I couldn't find a way on the WOTC roller to save rolls for verification, though?[/sblock]

Karl's continued vicous attack of bleeding profusely on the ankheg is suspended as the merciful Weel comes to the insect's aid!

OOC: is that humours enough?

Karl: -2 hp

Richard sees another burst the ground and thankfully miss him. With no time to glory over his amazing fortune with the first armor plated bug, the fighter swings around and lays into this one with equal ferocity...

[sblock=OOC & Crunchy Bits]
CoCo Dice Roller is a better dice roller if only because we can keep better track of what roll is what (which is not possible without making your own notes every time you roll on the WotC roller)
SO, I'll use that. Annnd, I'll pull back, just a tad, balancing the lack of to-hit-bonus from Charge with a -2, +4? PA, thus the numbers are:
To Hit +6, Damage d10+6 (Using both hands)[sblock=YIKES]Richard Rawen -2/+2 PA critical miss :( ... 1d20+6=7
1/20 #123468 2009-12-04 23:16:08

Richard Rawen -2/+2 PA 2 for confirm critical miss *sigh* ... 1d20=2
2/20 #123469 2009-12-04 23:17:06

Richard Rawen damage from -2/+2 Critical Miss... 1d10+6=10
4/10 #123470 2009-12-04 23:17:49 [/sblock]I take it back, I don't wanna use this roller!
 *SIGH*[/sblock]

aare we doing a critical miss thing in this thread? I guess i didn't get that memo ... eeep![/sblock]

Round 1, continued

Gildrim shakes off his astonishment at the sudden carnage, and hurries forward with a roar of his own, landing a solid blow on the second ankheg.

Round 2

Karl's blood continues to pool beneath him, mingling with that of the first ankheg.

Richard turns to the second monster, and, growing confident, tries a second mighty two-handed swing. This one nearly ends in disaster, though, as he completely misses and buries his sword six inches into the dirt. He quickly yanks it out, face burning.

Weel darts forward to Karl's side, calling on the gods for aid. His call is answered, and life-giving energy fills Karl, stopping the bleeding and restoring some color to his pallid face, but the explorer remains unconscious.

The ankheg turns to face Gildrim, lashing out at the source of its painful wound. The dwarf defends ably, though, knocking the serrated jaws aside.

[sblock=ooc]Gildrim hits for 12.

Karl fails to stabilize, falling to -8.

Richard misses. Critical fumbles are an optional alternate rule, I believe, not part of RAW for LEW, so it doesn't apply here. I dislike fumbles, myself; I think it's just not heroic, realistic, or fun to have trained, experienced warriors with a 1-in-40 chance of disaster every time they attack.

Weel moves and heals Karl, stabilizing him and bringing him back up to -3.

The ankheg attacks Gildrim, 1d20+7=13 misses.
