Round 3, continued

Gildrim continues to circle the ankheg, cutting deeply into its thorax.

Round 4

Karl staggers to his feet and scurries northward, instinctively putting ground between himself and the monster.

Richard takes advantage of Gildrim's distraction to land another huge two-handed blow, taking the ankheg right in the back. A steaming gout of ichor follows his blade when he yanks it free. The ankheg collapses, twitching for a few moments, then lying still. The road is suddenly quiet again.

End combat

[sblock=ooc]Gildrim moves to a flanking position and hits for 9 damage.

Karl... As I read it, tumbling is part of a move action. While prone, the only move actions available are crawling 5', and standing up. (Aside: though, why you can climb at 1/4 or 1/2 your speed, but can't crawl that fast, is beyond me.) Thus, as I read it you can't tumble while prone. Anyone else have an opinion on this? I don't necessarily trust my interpretation of 3.5e stuff any more... At any rate, it doesn't matter, because Karl isn't threatened, and can just stand up where he is, and then move normally from there. In the future, can you please specify which square you want to move to? "Away from the ankheg" is less helpful. I've put Karl in H5 for now.

Richard is already flanking, thanks to Gildrim's movement. (See PHB p.153 for flanking rules.) Richard hits for 13 (crit not confirmed), which is enough to drop the ankheg.

Karl stands (at H5) shakaly and pulls his bow only to see the insectoid monster fall to the ground. He looks around nervously and the approaches cautiously.

[sblock=dm: concerning map] I looked at post 148 and it is blank for some reason. Had i remembered it was there? I do not remember if it had shown before either. I will endevor to communicate better any needed information in the future. Sorry[/sblock]

At Karl's cautious approach, nothing stirs except his companions. The ankhegs lie dead.

[sblock=ooc]Huh, the map is shows up in that post for me. Ah, well, never mind. [/sblock]

OOC: re Map: oh well, that fight is over now.

in a horse voice Karl says, " wow, that was most unpleasent."

"Ah thocht ye wis deid, laddie!" says Gildrim. "Dinnae dae that agin, will ye?"

"Noo, bide a wee whil Ah tak a leuk at th' grund."

Though the ground has no doubt been disturbed by the battle and the burrowing of the monsters, Gildrim scouts about looking for signs that anyone from the wagon might have successfully made a run for it.

"Ah'm nae maister tracker, but Ah've spent mony an oor followin' th' cluits ay Nurazak goats."[sblock=OOC]Track feat, Search +2, Survival +7[/sblock]

To richard Karl replies with a shrug at first then says, "I have felt better, but I think I will survive, thanks to Weel"

Richard will add his eyes to the search,[sblock=OOC: ]1st, At the least Aid Another to give the +2 bonus to whatever is appropriate. If his Spot=18 is of any value use that instead.

2nd, I'll be gone Friday.[/sblock]hoping to find some sign of survivors.

At close range, and with a better informed idea of what may have happened here, Gildrim's trained eyes pick up several facts. The wagon's traces are snapped, and four sets of widely spaced horseshoe indents lead into the woods to the east, indicating fleeing horses. Two sets of booted footprints lead away from the wagon in the same direction, but end at two more disturbances in the grass similar to where the ankhegs surfaced. Spatters of blood near those holes tell the tale.

Richard quickly tires of following Gildrim around, hmming and aha-ing as he looks for signs. He looks around and catches a glint of metallic reflection off of the front of the cart. A closer look reveals a brass plaque hand-etched with swirling letters: "Marchwand and Sons, Cragger's Rest".

The wagon's cargo appears to be everyday staples, the sort of things you'd find in a country general store, but that wouldn't be grown on nearby farms. Most of it is bulky and not terribly valuable, but there is a small sealed box that smells strongly of spices, which could prove valuable.
