swearing

There are OTHER "W-words" but let's use decorum here... :)

In our games, we have a slightly loose modern-day tongue, but swearing with oaths is not uncommon in non-modern speech.

Where else do phrases such as Od's Blood ("Odin's Blood!"), or "Zounds!" ("God's Wounds!") come from?

swearing in our game, both in and out of character? constantly. and that's not even the worst of it. ;)

"how did you get that stuck in there?"

How about having a knowledge/perform (curses) skill and using it in appropriate situations? This would allow players with no-swearing rules to still play their characters fully.

Plus it has to be cool if after beating DC 30 with a perfom(curse) roll the BBEG blushes and stares at the 'performer' in horror.

Just an idea ;)

Only in the proper context, such as the context of a big person's shoe. Any other attempts to link gnomes and fecal matter will result in a lawsuit from the G.A.G. lawyers for defamation of gnomes.
Excellent work, #1. I shall inform the DOG* sub-comittee of your work to prevent this potential slander.

Most D&D characters Ive got dont swear much as in-character, though I do have a dark elf who will curse people out and make devils blush... then nuke them, (its all about making them feel small and impotent) then the chained and empowered disintergrate comes off.
Otherwise its not heroic without a quip or two :D

Other characters, yeah I guess it depends on the character and the setting I suppose.

Out of character, yes, all the time, far too frequently but normally only when fixing PC's, cars or rolling dice... because :):):):) me I cant roll dice worth :):):):)...

We swear from time to time while playing at the table. Most of the words have been around a long time and as long as we use them grammatically, nobody cares.
We even swear around the little ones since none of us really care to perpetuate the suppression of any useful language for silly reasons. However, since we recognize that some people are a bit more uptight about such things, we just tell the kids that it's private language that shouldn't be said in front of more sensitive people like teachers. So far it's worked.
Truth is, for kids, it's potty-based language like "poopy" and "butt" that are much more fun to say than more adult swearing anyway.

Depends I don't swear much usually, but in some modern games like cyberpunk, I play characters that swear frequently. Obviously if there are kids present I don't swear.

I haven't a clue what the w-word is, unless its wanker, which isn't really swear word in the UK. Wanker is only slightly more offensive than wally, where I come from, after all the majority of the population are wankers.

In a fantasy setting I think bastard is a fair expression to use and doesn't drag the game into modern slag. I believe the origins of the F-word actually go way back so it might not be as out of place as folks think.

I make an effort to never swear. I slip sometimes of course. Such as when recently a dolt at work handed me a part that was 440 degrees, while I wasn't wearing any gloves. Swore rather loudly actually. Called him an idiot as well. But under normal circumstances either at the gaming table or away from it I don't swear.
