Sword of Truth mini series' optioned.

Song of Ice and Fire would make a better regular show than miniseries, ala Rome, and would need to be an HBO or Showtime show, what with the mature content.
Looking forward to this though. If Raimi is directing, Campbell will be in it, as sure as Afleck and/or Lee will be in the next Kevin Smith movie.

I agree completely with Abe's statement! I've forced myself to continue the SoT series for the sole sake of saying I completed the series (or will competed when all is published).
My interest waned once Jagang entered the picture … especially with each successive book.
Of course this doesn't mean I'll shun the series when it comes out. Like other folk have stated I'll look forward to it and will watch it when it's released.

The first book was interesting if not particularly distinguished but after that the series really took a dive. I have resorted to my Dad's summaries of the latest books to see how things go and the plots are, at best, inane. Give me Dragonlance.

While I'll thoroughly agree that the series took a dive and that the series is, at best, an okay read I can't agree that the dive was taken after the first book. Stone of Tears and Temple of the Winds are pretty evenly tied as my favorite books in the series. Blood of the Fold wasn't bad but was utterly forgettable (to the extent that I've read it at least twice but can remember almost nothing about it) but I don't think it really hit the cliff until book 5. I've had at least three people tell me that Chainfire was a return to the good stuff from the first few books but the however many between Temple of the Winds and Chainfire so thoroughly soured me on the series that despite having been perpetually loaned a copy of Chainfire I have yet to bring myself to read it.

I thought it kind of went downhill after Stone of Tears, but honestly I did think that while Dragonlance was good, there was/is a lot more potential with Sword of Truth series than Dragonlance. Especially the villians. But I agree with everyone, Jag was a badly introduced and pretty weak villian. At least Darken Rahl had something going for him.
But I do think the themes of "us versus them" were overblown, especially the whole "goodness" side that Richard apparently is supposed to be about. Me, I'm just glad I won't pay good money to watch this.

George RR Martin spoke on the issue of a miniseries for Song of Ice and Fire when he attended at a signing session in Toronto this past January, 2006.
As noted above, GRRM certainly does have a fair bit of experience as a producer and script-writer in Hollywood. He is VERY interested in seeing it done.
As it turns out, the interest from those in the biz climbed to a fever pitch last December when TIME called GRRM "The American Tolkien". As GRRM put it "my agent's phone rang off the hook after that".
GRRM went on to say: "Do I think they read my books and liked them? No. I think they had never read Game of Thrones at all. If they had, they would have probably realized I killed off the hero and that would have ended that.
No it was more of "American Tolkien? Tolkien! Hmm. Wait a minute. Tolkien made a lot of money!!"
GRRM went on to say tht he would be very open to having a Song of Ice and Fire done as a Sopranos/ Rome style series on HBO, and that he would want to be the writer who did the script for it. However, GRRM said he would not get involved in such a project until the series itself was complete.
Given his TV background and frequent SoIaF casting comments GRRM makes from time to time, I think an HBO series on a per-book- basis would be quite likely if the money could be found to do it.

Agreed, I honestly think the best way to get ASOIF on the mainstream (beyond the books that is), is to do a mini-series. It would however require more money and committment than I think some networks might be willing to commit to. I honestly think GRRM should consider an animated approach. This option allows for a lot of fluidity for both GRRM and the networks that might air it. (Not to mention DVD sales.)
To do a movie, well non-animated anyway, would be more than most movie people would be willing to commit to at this point in time.
