Swords of the bastard kind

Ok, I need a concensus. The bastard sword can be used by a fighter with two hands without the exotic weapon proficiency and without penalties. This would seem to mean that the fighter is proficient with the bastard sword if s/he is weilding it with both hands, yes?

Enter the delima. Does that then mean that the fighter can take weapon focus bastard sword if it is being weilded with both hands?

No problem there; the Fighter can wield it two-handed because using bastard swords two-handed requires a Martial WP (edit - see the description of bastard swords for details: PHB, p.103) rather than an Exotic one.
Fighter get all Martial WPs. Thus, they have the appropriate WP for wielding bastard swords two-handed and can also buy WF for it.

A bastard sword used in two hands is a martial weapon, so yes, a fighter is automatically proficient in its use.

And yes, you can have weapon focus in bastard sword using two hands, but it would still be smarter to take the exotic weapon proficiency and weapon focus it then, otherwise you have wasted a feat.

Weapon Focus doesn't have any sort of distinction about how many hands you're using with the weapon, it would just be Weapon Focus (bastard sword). Because of the special rules for bastard swords, you'd be +1 to hit when using two hands and -3 to hit (-4 non-proficiency +1 focus) when using one hand. Later on you could pick up Exotic Weapon Proficiency (bastard sword) and get +1 to hit in both cases. No feat wastage at all.

No, WP requires proficiency with the weapon, you could could not gain proficiency retroactively.

So... In your opinion, if you only have MWP (bastard sword), do you get the +1 to hit for WF if you wield the sword one-handed (i.e., at -4 to hit)?

IMO, no, since you not proficient in the weapon used one-handed.

Hmm... I could see that...

But why not allow WF for both methods when you acquire the EWP later on?

Or, for that matter, if you already have both the MWP and EWP and then take WF, should you have to choose which of the two the WF applies to (rather than applying it to both)?
