Uh ... I cannot wait to hear the indepth explaination for this stance (seriously).

You take the feat: Weapon Focus (Bastard Sword).

You do not take Weapon Focus (Bastard Sword - Martial) or
Weapon Focus (Bastard Sword - EWP).

As such, the feat applies whenever you use the bastard sword, whether it is in one hand or two hands.

A strict DM might rule that you don't get the +1 bonus for using it one handed unless you also have the EWP Bastard Sword, but once you do take the EWP feat, the Weapon Focus bonus would apply.

True.

But you have to meet ALL the prereq's of a feat to be able to take it.

Since we are discussing a weapon that essentially requires two weapon proficiencies, one could also assume that you had to have both profieciencies to even get the feat in the first place.

Is there any particular reason you're being so rude?

Sorry about that!!! I hope you know me well enough by now to know that I did not mean to be rude. My apologies.

(Edit: I just could not see point of bringing the 'Hv Armor does not rule out WA' rule up in this discussion. Other than being a little know fact.)

First off, are you a native Dane?
I was born there but was spirited away at a young age.
I still have family in Virum.

Secondly, I think that Caliban is correct. I have been trying to get a handle on the subject and have come up with this. You are saying that the use of the B sword is really two skills, the phb agrees, but so is the use of a dagger. When the dagger is thrown, it has a dex modifier. When a dagger is used in melee, it has a strength modifier. So, take WF (dagger) do you have to focus specifically on the ranged portion or the melee portion? No, you get the two for one deal. Even if you add the Weapon Finesse feat, which really changes the dagger's dynamics in melee.
Keeping that in mind, if you are still thinking of the BS as two diff. weapons, the BS would require a one-hand WF and a two-hand WF even if you started with the EWP. But, that would be silly. So, why would it not work the other way. If you are using the sword enough to focus with it and become proficient with it at the same time, you should be able to maintain the focus throughout the transfer of proficiency.

The bastard sword does not require two weapn proficiencies. It only requires one. The other is optional.

The Weapon focus feat only requires that you be proficient in the weapon. You only need one feat to be considered proficient.

You do not need to be proficient in all possible styles of the weapon to take the "Weapon Focus" feat. As you learn the other possible fighting styles the weapon can be used with, the feat applies to them as well.

Fighting with a single weapon wielded in one hand is a style of fighting.

Fighting with a single weapon wielded in two hands is another.

Fighting with a weapon and sheild is another style.

Fighting with two weapons is another style.

You can use a longsword with all 4 styles if you choose.

Do you think that you lose the benefit of "Weapon Focus (Longsword)" depending on which style you use it with?

A Bastard Sword is just a bigger sword, and it's slightly harder to master all the styles with it, which is why it requires a second feat. But no matter how you use it, it's still a bastard sword, and Weapon Focus (Bastard Sword) will apply.
