Tactics?

WD40

First Post
I ran an encounter the other week with a critter with the wonderful 'Swallow Whole' ability...

My players had a unique way of dealing with it... They buffed the rogue, and tried to get him eaten...

Because once he's swallowed he can fire off sneak attacks every round, until he cuts himself out and muscular action closes the hole... at which point, he tried to get himself eaten again...

The rogue asked if there was a way he could carry on hacking away without 'falling out'.. I ruled against this.. the other players, simply sat and watched, with the the druid and the cleric readying actions with 'acid-proofing' spells and the odd cure for when the rogue popped out.

This is a new level of 'Tactics' that I think can only come from a D&D game.

Any other stories of fantastic uses of game mechanics and D&D world-only tactics out there?

(BTW: The Devine Flavor gag was done to death in that session, so please restrain yourselves!)

That's a pretty standard dragon-killing tactic. Hercules used it to kill the sea-monster to save Hesione (he got bald because of the acid),

Or a Mandean mythic hero god Hibil, who speaks:

"Karkum the great flesh-mountain said unto me: Go, or I shall devour thee. When he spoke thus to me, I was in a casing of swords, sabres, lances, knives, and blades, and I said unto him: Devour me. Then ... he swallowed me half-way: then he spewed me forth. ... He spewed venom out of his mouth, for his bowels, his liver, and his reins were cut to pieces."

Or the Lambton worm

The tactic was also used in the first MIB movie.

Also, I believe there is a native American myth were Coyote tricks a giant into swallowing him whole, then uses a sharp stone he has hidden on his person to cut his way out.

Sneak Attack: The rogue must be able to see the target well enough to pick out a vital spot
I would think being wrapped up inside a creatures belly would limit being able to pick out vital spots...

I beleive this has been debated a couple times over in the Rules forum...

But yes, it is a tactic represented in myths and stories... Just watched MiB the other night :)
