Making the death star’s weakness an intentional act of sabotage may connect it to the characters, but at the cost of weakening the themes of the original film. It changes the empire’s Achilles heel from a flaw of their own creation, born of their nature as a massive system, into a product of the rebellion, and in so doing muddies the message of the story.

I see what you're saying, but...
- I don't know that I think one should weaken one's current movie in order to avoid potentially weakening the themes of an earlier movie, and

- The Empire was not just about collectivism and technology, but oppression and tyranny, and having their bid for total power undone because they coerced someone into helping them works for that theme.

The flaw didn't need explaining, true, but I don't really think the metaphor of the original film is really weakened by making a personal connection later. It's still about hubris and the rest of the stuff you described, it just also has another meaning in a different movie.

For sure. It works well for Rogue One, I’ll grant that.
