Talent Trees - Why do we believe they are in?

Actually, talent trees were in Diablo II before they were in WoW, and Diablo II predates d20 Modern by over a year, IIRC.
And Diablo II's talent trees were inspired by StarCraft's tech trees, according to Blizzard.

4E: Too much like StarCraft! :p

I believe that it is unlikely 4E will have talent trees because we already know about enough design space:
  • Powers
  • Feats
  • Paragon Paths & Epic Destinies
Talents would be straddling the divide between Powers and Feats, which I doubt they would feel necessary. We haven't heard about them in Races & Classes or any articles or playtests either to my knowledge. The Golden Wyvern Adept feat would have made more sense in my opinion as a Talent, if they existed.

I don't think they exist.

I thought those were pretty clearly inspired by Civilization's tech trees.

Development of 4e will make all my barracks obsolete. :(

I reallly loathed Saga, but I love 4E. I just don't get why so many people think Saga is great. While alot of the ideas are good ideas, they have cruddy execution, and the entire book (Saga, that is.) Feels like it's a playtest version, rather than the final product.

Really? I just bought Saga, and besides getting used to that whole only 1 attack per round thing, I really like the rules.

But maybe, you feel that way because in some ways, SAGA and Bo9S are the blueprints for 4E.

I think the Powers are organized into talent (power?) trees.

Which of course was inspired by nature's tree.

So please 4e, can you stop copying god and come up with something original:)

I agree: best guess is powers are probably something of what talent trees evolved into. The only real difference between talents and feats in previous games has been that talents were more specifically tied into classes. And they have already stated feats will no longer have any kind of class-based requirements. Since talent trees, as pointed out above, were never quite as tree-like as the name implies, if most or even some powers have other powers as pre-reqs, then powers are pretty much talents (only, hopefully, cooler than most d20 Modern talents).

Also, the talent tree prereqs could make creating high level NPCs a bit of a pain.

Now if the powers don't have much in the way of prereqs, other than 'tier', that would make it nice and easy to assign powers to NPCs...
