Talisman - The Magical Quest Game - Ah.... That takes me back...

A couple of weeks ago, I met a friend of mine I hadn't seen in, yikes!, 13 years. We started talking and he mentioned Talisman. Mind you, this was the game that I had told my wife and friends about but could not, for the life of me, remember it's name. He had gotten lucky enough to stumble upon it at a garage sale a few months earlier. Of course, we spent a bit reminiscing about the game. I actually just won it on ebay, the 2nd edition of course. ;)

Anyway, I always loved that game. My friends and I would play it for hours on end, forever wandering towards the tower, hoping to win our prize... and always trying to screw each other over. :p

I know the game was/is extremely popular, but seeing as I wasn't living the the US, or even in a "gaming community," at the time, I had no idea anyone else had even heard about it.

Anyone else have any interesting stories about the game, or just want to share their experiences with it? I heard a 3rd edition was released recently. Anyone get a chance to play it? Just curious. :D

BTW, I found this interesting site on the game: http://www.harris-authors.com/talisman.html

I have an anchient copy of this game but normally my wife is loath to play it and my gaming group, would rather RP. I have convinced others to try it about every other year.

The last time we played there were 4 players, 2 vied for the crown, I hung around and used some special ability to make life harder - but had no chance of winning and the last player sat around bored, stuck with low stats.

HR we play with:
craft can be gained the same as strength (trade 7 to 1)
remove 1/3 aprox of gold cards. (gold sucks)
getting the crown wins (criminy the game is long enough already)

We have come up with 2 varient rules - which have yet to be tried.

One is to keep people from falling to far behind in stats, just like it isn't much fun to play a 2nd lvl pc in a party average lvl 12
if any persons Craft or Strength reaches 8 then everyone who has a 4 or less gets +1, if they reach 10 then everyone at 5 or less gets +1 etc....

The second is called Toad rules and is a wet and squishy game.
1. everyone is a toad str 1 craft 1 (normally between 1-6 by class)
2 you can increase these by winning fights (trade in 7 str for +1 to stat)
3 you can carry any one item except a shield or armour
4 helmets count as full armour (you are under it)
5 if you use a horse like item, you fall off and it is lost at the end of your turn.
6. you have a movement of 1 (little hop) 2 (big hop) instead of d6
7 if you get transformed into a toad then you draw a random character and use all ablities and stats listed for 3 rounds.
7b if you land on a toad while transformed you can pick them up and throw them up to 3 squares.
8 you can have one follower, but if you draw a second follower they leave togeather. Running off to discard pile. (following a toad around is boring)
9 if you loose all your lives you are out of the game.
