Targeted ads

Not really embarrassing but amusing - my buddy always asks for a lift to games night, so GMail always shows ads for elevators and elevator repair services with his emails.

I hate targeted ads -- they're creepy. I'm having to clear my cookies more and more often to avoid them.

The worst, unfortunately, have been here -- that "male-oriented" MMO or whatever it is with the scantily clad artwork.

yup. that's the pornoMMO ad. WTH!

I can only imagine it got picked up by the fact that everything else on screen is about gaming, and there was probably some thread that talked about something naughty on EN world.

I think I've seen that MMO ad here and elsewhere, both with my home computer and work computer. But I wouldn't call it porn. Titillating, sure. But not over a line. I suspect it's just assuming it will catch the eyes of a majority-male gamer demographic. It apparently does.

For years I've been curious to experiment with clicking on some ads just to see what is actually at the other end. If I had the knowledge and/or resources, I'd set up a safe computer to do exactly that. Click those "interesting" links, (not just porn-like ones), and see what's actually to see.

I'm assuming it's gaming site + male demographic that pops that ad. I do wonder if any female EN Worlders get it as well (I'd guess yes).
