Tarrasque, where did it come from?

Or what created it? Just thought of it, anyone has any thoughts or sources?

Its a French Dragon from a town which AFAIK is also called Tarrasque (or somthing similar but in French) it was tamed by a Virgin and lead through the streets before it was slaughtered

I think it was a lake dragon near Tarascon, in France. Do a quick search online, and you'll probably find more references to the dragon than to the D&D monster.

I don't think it was just "another" dragon, though I'm not altogether sure of the legend. I just know that different dragon legends have different interpretations of the creature.

Is the Terrasque associated with Carolingian legend (Charlemagne, Roland, Odo, etc?)
