TCotM: Tenebrynn's Idylls

"Ah, but you don't remember meeting her, I'll wager. Hmmm...yes, the amnesia is not complete then. You seem to have no problem with short-term memory and forming new memories, nor with the longest-term memories from before a certain point. This either means that the damage to your brain was contained and that you will suffer no further trouble beyond the current memory loss, or it means that your current memories may too begin to slip once you reach a certain point and they are pushed to the injured part of your memory. The former seems more plausible given the apparent source of the problem. And if so, you should be able to live a perfectly normal life, sans those memories of course."

"How was Sin destroyed without destroying the Crux? If I am recalling correctly we needed to get to it before she emerged, that's what I was doing last I remember."

"Well, I only arrived later, but from what I've heard from you, it went something like this: You ran upstairs while Vanitri refused to retreat. Hogarth had to come down to save him, but he was slain and his soul trapped by Sin, while Senex used his last power to spirit me away here to the Academy so Sin couldn't possess my body. Sin was afraid that the rest of you would destroy the crux, so she bluffed that she could make a magically binding contract and negotiated with Rinaldo. When he discovered that the contract couldn't actually bind him, Rinaldo betrayed her by reneging on his end of the deal after she had fulfilled her own, bringing Rayne back when he returned me. What followed was a long and arduous battle, but after Sin ran low on spells pelting Delayed Blast Fireballs up at us, Rayne made herself Invisible and sneaked up on Sin, delivering the final blow. We still could find no way to destroy the Crux, and it seemed rather more harmless than we had originally thought, so we all just left it alone."

"They turned out to have a very limited range and no ability to ramify farther or cause any havoc outside of that area, plus the tower jumps through time and isn't even present or dangerous for much of the time. Thus, with four Wizards present to study the effects, you found the delimiters of the distorted area and enacted obelisks warning travelers away from that area. Considering that the Crux might have gone unstable and done something far far worse if it was destroyed, that seemed like the best idea at the time, I guess."

"Well I am glad that the effect is localized, I hope those farmers in the area are okay with it sticking around. That doesn't leave much options for me to retrieve those memories beyond just waiting, does it?"

"Well, it does seem the most likely option, or rather it has the best prognosis averaged out over all possible outcomes. The chances that your memory will return naturally may be slightly lower than one of the crazy options, but unlike those extreme procedures, there is no risk of sudden death."

"Perhaps if there were some way to shore up my mental defenses prior to trying. I know that in Sin's tower after that horrible ooze thing got me, it was those type of items and spells that saved me from dissolving. Something similar might help if we were to try some of the riskier procedures."

"Hmmm. Depending on the nature of the unwanted side effect, I would consider it most probable that such precautions would not be of assistance. There is a chance that they would help, though. In other words, all the mental fortitude in the world is of no use if you are sucked into a rift to Nullspace and left there forever, for example."

"Well alright, that would not be good should that happen. I just feel that I can't let this go, especially if you are unsure whether I will keep the new memories I have."

EDIT: "Laynie, do you remember if anyone else approached the Crux after me? I wonder if the others have had the same things happen to them." he adds.
