Yes, we're aware of that. We debated a rebrand, but we've been running with the name for over a year and felt it would have done more harm than good. The two products are substantially different, however, so we think it'll be pretty safe to move ahead with it.

Over six hundred dollars raised so far! I am both touched and amazed by this outpouring of generosity from the gaming community. Great job, comrades.

Rule of Cool Gaming has promised neat donation incentives here. Enjoy!

Given that the average RPG party is composed of itinerant kleptomaniac hobos with a viscous murderous streak several miles wide, who are willing to perform virtually any task for monetary rewards, this strikes you as odd how?

Rangers are "soldiers of fortune?" How... odd.

I think the "snippet" that starts this thread provides a skewed idea if you have not seen the entire entry (I'm comparing it to the beta). Obviously you (Dandu) have seen the entire entry where as it would seem Dausuul has only the snippet to go on. Perhaps the snippet could have been a little broader in its focus and thus diffuse the apparent disconnect. [Ranger=Soldier of Fortune is not something I would normally associate together either].

Having said that, the beta does seem to have a different slant on the idea of a ranger compared to the Tolkeinesque Ranger most of us are ingrained with. There is a definite focus on combat role - I'm not sure how different the beta is to the final version though.

In the current version, Rangers are described thusly:
Rangers are masters of guerilla warfare, capable scouts and vicious soldiers that use their environment and shrewd tactics to dispose of their enemies. Though their skills are naturally suited for war, during rare times of
peace rangers ply their deadly trade in the wilderness as hunters, wardens or poachers. Though their abilities are well-suited for working alone, rangers sometimes form groups with like-minded characters such as rogues and barbarians in order to shore up their weaknesses and maximize their strengths.

The Legend system does not cleave to Tolkienesque fantasy as much as some other game systems; we've shared some of the concepts and inspiration, but our goal was to create a system that could be bent to serve any game. The nice thing about Legend is that if our ranger doesn't quite meet your expectations of what a "ranger" should be, it's very easy to customize your character to those expectations with our Track system.

I think you have succeeded in this in not boxing the ranger into "fighting nature dude" but expanding it into the vision indicated by Dandu's quote (which seems identical to the beta). It would seem you could easily bend the ranger to Tolkien if that's what the player wanted as you could bend it in quite a few alternative directions. That initial preview snippet however would cause confusion in that it does not join your expanded vision of the ranger to the concepts already held by the average player. The best solution of course for such confusion is to download the game (donating to your charity) and checking it out.

Whatever the case, I wish you the best of luck in this endeavour. :)
