I think that reviewers who feel they can set aside their personal tastes are fooling themselves. If you don't inlclude some measure of taste, you don't end up with a critical review - you end up with a simple synopsis.

The trick to a good review is not the ability to set aside your own tastes. It is to realize that your own tastes are not teh end-all be-all, so that you can include your personal tastes and also look beyond them a bit to see what other value the thing you are reviewing may have.

To the original poster I have to say that a review that doesnt include personal opinions of the product is about as useless as it can get. Without a personal point of view of the reviewed product the one person looking for advice for/against the product would never get an impression whether the product is the right choice or not. A pure synopsis doesnt show the quality of the product, just the content of it. And I think the quality is one of the more important aspects we want to have reviewed. To get a synopsis I can go to the producers homepage, read the back cover of the book or look at the index at Amazon.

Clearly Teflon Billy didnt think this product is any good and thus wrote this in his review. It is his opinion he wrote that down. Now it is the readers choice to wait for another review, decide to buy it anyway or to just not buy it because the review gave him enough reason to leave it on the shelves. That's the way reviews work, at least in my opinion.

It wasn't that bad, but he makes it sound like it was really awful.

He's not a veru good reviewer if he can't set aside his perosnal tastes when reviewing.

Haven't you, by posting this, just doen what you accuse him of?

All reviewers bring their tastes to the table. Accept it or learn to ignore reviews.

Based on the review, TB's "personal tastes" appear to be: imaginative use of game mechanics, interesting, coherent backgrounds, and distinctive, memorable characters.

That crazy guy. :D

I read the review, and it seems fair if unflattering. Perhaps you could explain what you feel Teflon Billy missed or overlooked, Green Vision?

hehe... I am extremely wary of 5 star (or the equivalent) reviews.

Nobody is perfect (me least of all), and thus the corollary is that no product is perfect (especially mine :D).

On a more general note, a 5 star review does not mean the book is perfect. I usually point out flaws even in a 5 star review. It just mean s the reviewer found it damn good, least IMHO

Dang. I was looking forward to that product was well. Just the kinds of gaffs he mentions in the character writeups would turn me off it, and there is nothing emotional about that stuff. If a writeup says 'is a fantastic leader' and the stats give him a Cha: 12 with no Leadership or Inspire feat, guess what? He's not a fantastic leader. Sounds like whoever did the statblocks couldn't be bothered to read the fluff text.
