Tell Me About GENCON...

I find that a really funny comment--"scope out" indeed. How could you miss them? The primary problem in modern buildings is finding the stairs! I never did figure out how *not* to use the elevator or escalator to get to several parts of the convention center, last year. Very frustrating. [Elevators and escalators are a waste of energy for those who don't need them, and slow, to boot.]

Really funny, Nate? :p There are usually stairs next to escalators, but not always the reverse. But I guess the point is that you missed the part about the hand cart (or a baby carriage, for that matter) even though you quoted it. Carts and carriages don't play well with stairs.

As to scoping out the elevators and escalators, that's in relation to any pre-scheduled events (and their locations) someone might have. It never hurts to know in advance how you plan to get somewhere. Another point to knowing where all/most of the escalators and elevators are is because, as happens, they can sometimes break down and knowing where the next nearest one along happens to be helps a great deal if you have a cart or carriage and are pressed for time getting to an event.

Just common sense, really, but probably little use to a woodelf who likely slides down stairs on the backs of shields and leaps atop Oliphants as a means of transportation. :D

Old One, you're not allowed to miss both Terpcon AND Gencon. Where are you going to get your game on?

"If it weren't fer dem durn meddlin' kids (and wives), my plans would have succeeded!" :p

Unfortunately, gaming has taken a bit of a back seat this year...with 2 little ones, a hellish travel schedule (over 60 out of town speaking engagements booked so far this year) and long work weeks (usually 60-70 hours), I need to clone myself so I can get some gaming in!

I plan to be there for TERPCON III in the fall and it looks like I will be able to make the NC Gameday as well, so all is not lost!

every single one. st00pid DMs bailed. didn't let any of us know. so i got up and went to all of those sessions only to be told i could get a refund after sitting there for a while.

plus i toted around a backpack full of lead minis and dice, so i could run an OD&D game for ENWurlders... it was like being hazed all over again in college... except back then i didn't pledge a frat.

Hey, if you're at GC 05 and have your OD&D with you, the wife and I would play in a heartbeat. I've never played it, and I think she only played AD&D back in '79...she can't remember any more. :)

I stopped bring stuff to GC. One pouch of dice, a handful of minis, a book or two (usually to be signed). I come HOME with truckloads of stuff.

Just burn the place down and take the insurance money.....just get all your gaming crap out first.....or leave the d02 stuff....

See. there's 2 of us. TB and I can handle, what, 10 or 11 characters each? :p

Hey, you could get Francisca, TB, Cthulhu's Librarian, ME and one other. That's 4, a good start to an adventuring group. ;)

Isn't it the truth!? We nearly had to rent a U-Haul to get home last year! ;)

Actually, this is the reason I tell the husband over and over that we *have* to drive to GenCon (it's only 9-10 hours)... trying to be preped for all the stuff you will buy by bring extra suitcases is just a pain, and nearly impossible. Need the spacious back of our Ford Escape to provide us with enough room to store all the glorious things we will inevitably purchase. :D

Wow, what line of work are you in?

JD -

I actually wear a couple of hats...

My "day" job is "Deputy Director, Financial Planning and Education" for a large non-profit associated with the military. I travel nationally for them speaking to retired, active duty, national guard and reserve audiences on financial planning, military/retiree benefits and military-to-civilian transition topics. I also write several monthly/quarterly articles for various publications, manage web content and answer member questions.

I also run my own small private financial planning/financial education consulting firm as well, where I manage money (~ $12 million) for a small group of clients, do hourly financial planning work and provide paid financial education seminars for corporations, non-profits and private schools.

Between the two, I have over 60 speaking engagements on the books for this year and am likely to pick up 10-25 more as the year progresses...makes for a busy life!
