Tell me about the 1E AD&D DMG

Nah, Gary signed my copy of "Greyhawk" (the original brown book supplement for the white box) back at GenCon 18. Not jealous, but hopefully old-school at heart. ;-)

And originally, I had the first-ever sold copy of Temple of Elemental Evil, signed by him as well. I ended up selling that piece of Gygaxana for an embarassingly small sum more than a decade ago...

Thul--

I have the same brownbook Greyhawk, signed by both Gary Gygax and Rob Kuntz. Gary even told me the story of how Terry Kuntz invented the beholder pictured on the cover. It was the only other thing I got signed that weekend. However, it does not have as much sentimental value to me, as I bought the book on eBay some weeks before the con. Still, it is quite cool to own, both of these things being right up there with my Silver Surfer #1 signed by Stan Lee. Sorry for the threadjack, OP. :uhoh:

I have a copy, and I have yet to sift through it, in actuality. It wasn't until EN World that I truely even realised the gem that I had in my collection, which was given to me by my girlfriend (before we were going out) over 4 years ago as a gift. I still can't thank her enough for that :D

How much would it be worth (in money, not nostalgia value ;)), does one suppose? Mine is signed inside by the previous owner, and is a little worn around the edges, but otherwise fine.

cheers,

I grew up with this book. Untold hours were spent among its pages. I could wax (though probably not eloquently) extensively on its virtues, but also on its vices.

Even though I seldom play OAD&D anymore, I do still find it a handy reference on occasion. (As I do many of my RPG books.)

Perhaps there is something to be found there, however, that can only be found by growing up with it.

I've used my 1E DMG with just about every FRPG I've played, over the years. There's a lot of good stuff in there. Since I started playing C&C, I've been using it even more than usual.

One of the more popular sections is the "dungeon dressing" part with the various lists (rooms, tricks, traps, gems, noises, etc). If you like the 1E DMG for that, you should also check out Gary Gygax's World Builder, which is like that section of the DMG expanded into an entire book.

Not too much. TSR printed an awful lot of these, so unless it's a very early printing (which, if that scan is a picture of your actual book, it isn't) or is in mint condition (which, per your description, it isn't) The Acaeum (old-D&D collectors' site) places its value around $5; which is to say you might be able to get $10 if you're lucky. I'd say you're much better off keeping and using it :)

How different is the 1E AD&D DMG from the 3.5 DMG?

very different game. it is infinitely better than the revised edition.

How much of its content would be transferrable between systems (i. e. are many of its ideas usable for a 3.5 game)?

all of it plus the extras that aren't included in the revised edition.

QFT.

I don't play or DM 3.X but it seems to me that all of the DM advice and many of the tables could be used in 3.X with no problem. Plus there's the random dungeon generator. . . .

For example, there are rules on how to handle lycanthropy, drunkeness, and mental illness. Does the 3.X DMG have these? Note that these rules are more-or-less system independent.

One doesn't really need the DMG to run a campaign, but it remains indispensible. I would add that the same holds true for EGG's later works like Lejend Master's Lore and Living Fantasy.
