Paging Kengar...

There are some huge fans of this game. It is very rules light- based off of the old Railwars miniatures game I believe. Far less tactical than D&D and conducive to high-flying style campaign from what I read. At one time there were a set of quick start rules you could download and play for free.

I think test drive rules 4.0 are it. Download it and try for yourself. There is enough free stuff on the Great White Games website to get a pretty good flavor of the game's flow and mechanics.

The game is pretty nice, one of my favorite rule slite games. I personally think it does non fantasy better than DnD sword and scorcery stuff, but thta just me. But it is a rule lite system so if you are used to d20 it may take some getting used to.

However you can mod just about any game setting/system to SW and lose relatively little in the process. You should check out dragonsfoot.org- they have a great SW section and forum and even rules for converting 1ed AD&D to SW.

And in addition Great White has put out one of my favorite campaign books: 40 Fathoms for SW -a pirate fantasy campaign. The book is a plot point book-its an uber module and campaign world which really makes it easy on a DM.

I also think Deadlands is going to be re released "Reloaded" for Savage Worlds, which is a perfect setting for SW.

Anyways, Id run the free pdf adenture the Eye of Kilquato over at the dragonsfoot website to get a taste of it.

The system is fairly good for a rules lite system, but I wasn't a big fan. We used it for a Sci-Fi game, and it worked, but I've seen better and smoother systems. Plus, we had to ad-hoc a lot of things.

I think the theory behind it is nice -- light enough that the GM can handle things quickly and easily, but with the depth needed for PCs.

But IMO, it fails on the latter half of its promise. Like most rules light games I have encountered, it is too light to provide mechanical support for character depth IMO.

I also dislike that even after the strange hiccups in their open ended dice system were exposed in deadlands, they used fundamentally the same dice system.

But hey, the campaign books for it are pretty cool.

Of the one time I played a demo of it, I found the characters kind of one-dimensional, but very good at what they did. I imagine a regular full game of it might be a bit more detailed in character.

A few extra thoughts:

It's definitely fun, and very easy to pick up on. It also can handle most any pulpy genre there is, but if I recall correctly, very gritty it doesn't do well. It's creator, Shane Hensley, said that he designed it as a game that he in his friends could play a good session, with combat, interaction, and fast-paced fun in a couple of hours a night, because as the gaming population ages, there's a demand for games that don't take a lot of time to resolve things. It does accomplish that goal, from that I've seen, and I've been told you can run some MASSIVE combat simulations with it. It is related to Deadlands kind of like how the D&D minis game is related to D&D.

My group played it for several sessions and no one liked it very much. It was far too gamey in its approach to roleplaying. Now days if I want a quick rules-lite system, I would play unisystem.

I'm really, really interested in picking Savage Worlds up - sell me on it or convince me not to, please!

It's worth picking up. I really like the system, and would like to run a short campaign using the system at some point (I've been kicking around an idea for Kobold Marauders sweeping through the countryside destroying human villages, with the PCs playing the Kobolds). The campaign books, as Psion said, are excellent. There is a lot of info for using SW to run old style D&D games over on Dragonsfoot (http://www.dragonsfoot.org/sw/).

If you want to take a look at the core book, let me know and I'll bring it into work one day and you can stop by skim through it. I think there might be a revised edition that just came out, but you'll get the idea.
