Telling your Game buddys to shut up!

I love my role playing group. We hang out, go to movies, check out games, and other stuff.

Most of us are friends.

However, after reading http://somethingpositive.net/index.html , that's the July 14th strip of Somethimg Positive for those who join us latter, I realize how true this is.

Go see a movie, go to the Corner Bakery, start talking about the upcoming baseball game, and someone just starts talking about their character or about something in the game. The rest of ya really don't want to hear about the bad dice rolls or the coffee on the character sheet but they keep talking. Sometimes loudly.

Do you.

A. Deny you know them.
B. Tell them to Shut the Hell Up.
C. Ignore them.
D. Move to a different table?

Don't get me wrong. We've all got our 'game' grove where you want to sit back and bs about the game but man, not all the time. Shut up already.

I generally prefer the latter. 'Course, the fact that I do that during the sessions as well may be just as much of a problem.

Have you ever sepnt any time with folks who play Everquest?

I swear to God, it is the only topic of conversation they can engage in.

I doubt you have or, from the sounds of it, you would have either killed yourself, or been sent ot jail for killing them

I don't really have much advice for you re: "Frothing Game Goobers" outside of just staying the course and saying stuff like "Give it a rest man" or "Leave it at the table" etc.

It probably won't work.

Generally I talk about hockey and if the person doesn't get it, I ignore them. It usually works.

My wife usually ignores me when I do that with my friends. But I don't do it too often because we usually only get to see each other on game days. But then again I get the same reaction when I start talking about the latest LPE Cadillac with a Twin Turbo 427 engine.

a) It's no worse that sports fans who constantly talk about the latest game, or women I know who gosip about peoples private affairs 24/7, or movie fans who can't stop reciting movie quotes. It's just... what it is.

b) I play everquest. I don't talk about it out of game, as a rule, except stuff like, "Hey, if you ever make a character on Povar, hunt me up.", and stuff like that.

Some months ago I introduced my offsider the Padawan Newb to D&D, gave him some advice about where to play, find some people and off he goes and gets himself the books, some players and apart from the endless rabbiting about D&D I did manage to get some work done and even managed to teach him how to do the job...

12months down the track, he's now infected 3 other people out of the 8 in the Fishtank that is our sealed off bit of the office space, Passive-Aggressive, Disqualified Driver and Social Misfit #2 also now play with Padawan Newb and they NEVER SHUT UP about it!

Ok, I'll admit, we're all dirty computer geeks so some things are acceptable that 'normals' usually find hideous.
Ok, I sorta like D&D but not a real lot, Im a bit jaded at the moment.
Ok, I dont mind talking about it once in awile...
...just not all the damn time!
