Template for a troll

The three mindflayers are not neccessary. They might have been destroyed, resulting in a free willed voidmind troll. And yes, the template is rather overpowered (but that goes for a lot of creatures and templates from MM3).

Also, if you're someone who believes in using the mechanics provided by WotC and using the flavor that best suits your game, then the original fluff for the template doesn't really matter. Find a flavor description that fits the abilities and suits your taste, and run with it.

Consider the following. The below does require access to the PHB II:

  1. On the basic troll, swap out the following feats: Alertness for Endurance and Track for Indomitable Soul (PHB II, pg 80)
  2. Add elite array of stats, if desired
  3. Add five levels of barbarian. For the one feat gained by these levels, choose Steadfast Determination (PHB II, pg 83)
  4. As part of his equipment, give him a Horn of Goodness/Evil (6,500 gp)

Once he knows the PCs are coming, you can have him blow the horn. This gives him the equivalent of magic circle against good, which will protect him from charm spells and other forms of direct mental control.

Assuming a non-elite stat array and that he is raging, his Will save will be +15 base (+17 if the caster is Good):

+2 [Troll Racial] +1 [Barbarian] +8 [Constitution Bonus; See Steadfast Determination] +2 [Iron Will] + 2 [Rage Bonus] +2 [Only applies if caster is good; See magic circle against evil]

Also, because of Indomitable Will, he will be able to roll two d20s on these Will saves and pick the best one.

Unless he gets disastrously unlucky, he should be able to resist just about any incoming mental attacks.
