Tenser's floating Disk

SRD:
It floats along horizontally within spell range and will accompany you at a rate of no more than your normal speed each round.

So its movement rate is your normal speed each round.
So... if I polymorphed myself into a cheetah and sat onmy floating disc I'd have the fastest damn disc the world had ever seen?

Also, if I cast it, sat a member of the party on it, then polymorphed myself to a flying creature with perfect maneuvreablility, I could fly around like a maniac and they would follow? (Bearing in mind of course, that I stayed within the alotted distance of the disc on a height scale so as not to negate the spell) sounds like fun if I put my archer friend on the back of it? We'd be like a gun platform!

Sure, go for it. Combine a 4th level spell with a 1st level spell to make it slightly better. Of course, that is in my game, by the raw it is your 'normal' speed, which is unchanged when you use polymorph.

Also, the disk must remain approximately 3' off the ground, period. So, flying around and trying to keep it from winking out will greatly limit your flight space.

Under "Spells: Special Commentary for Refereeing" from 1st Ed. DMG p. 45: "Tenser's Floating Disc: The caster cannot ride on the Disc. The Disc always follows the magic-user."

Cue chorus of "you can't look at previous editions".

In previous versions it was expressly disallowed. In this version, it is not expressly disallowed. It follows you unless otherwise directed. So you direct it to support your weight, then direct it to carry you around. Nothing in the current rules seems to suggest otherwise.

Yes, this debate will likely be neverending.

Yep, if we try to look at previous editions then tons of problems happen, especially in the realm of spells.

The spell as written does not disallow it, in fact the wording says you may direct it as you wish. It really doesnt get much clearer than that without saying directly, 'you can sit on it and still direct it'.
