Terminology

DEFCON 1, good post but I have to offer different suggestions for a couple of items. Instead of WALK, call it a HUSTLE. A different word that correlates at least to a previous version. Instead of POSITION action it should be even more generic, such as MAJOR or better yet LESSER action. Another idea would be SECONDARY action, but that kind of overloads primary/secondary weapons.

blah blah blah

MOVE ACTION

blah blah blah

WALK

blah blah blah

The problem here is that you don't actually seem to understand what these game terms mean regardless. So, perhaps you are right about the confusion, but it doesn't help to clear it up when you don't understand what they mean.

Specifically:

Move means to move. That's all. Any form of movement. It does not matter if you are moving your speed, shifting, flying, or anything, they are all considered a 'move'. Every other form of movement is a subset of move. So powers that say 'when you move' don't care about how you move, only -that- you move. Moving does not even have to occur on your turn, or even as a result of your own action.

Move action: You get one a turn. They do not always involve movement, or changing your own or anyone else's position; however this is the most common use of it, hense why it's called a move action. Just think of 'move action' as it's own word, and you'll be okay. Moving as part of another action (many attack powers) is not a move action unless the power says it is.

Walk: This is a very specific action; taking a move action to move your speed. This is the most common form of move action taken, and it refers ONLY to taking that specific action. Powers cannot let you walk, there's no abilities that tell you to walk. Walking only means one thing: Take a move action to move your speed. Moving in any other context is not walking, and taking a move action to move your speed is no other action but the 'walk' action.

Where the confusion lies here is that some people confuse the walk action with the move action itself. This is not correct. Walk is a -specific- move action.

Says my party warlord who moves people all the time!

I tried to convince the bard to talk to the guy to get him to cut it out but he just smiled, nodded, played something on his flute, and said... 'You know he might be on to something.'

Yes, that's one of the funniest OOTS comics. Nonetheless, it was written pre-4e. Is anyone in this thread going to admit that WotC actually solved that problem in 4e, or is everyone just going to keep pointing to pre-4e stuff?

Correct!

IME, "attack" is the only really problematic word, especially for newbies. It took quite a while to train my new players to know the difference between "attack" and "damage" (they seemed to implicitly believe that these terms were synonyms -- maybe I've been playing too long to be able to relate). Phrases like "the party is attacked" don't help, either.

As for the "dungeon level" thing, I prefer the term "dungeon floor", like floors in a building.

I totally agree that WotC fixed the problem in 4E. XP me, plz. ;)

That's even more problematic!

You jump out a window on the first floor of a building. Do you:

A) Fall a couple inches and walk away, or:

B) Fall a dozen feet and break your ankle?

The people I know are pretty evenly split between the two options.

Cheers,
Roger
