Tests and Trials (Manzanita Judging)

Devlin Magruder, human rogue 3

"I agree that there's more here than we were told about. The wizard in the tower said he wanted proof, what if I bring him some 'souvenirs' from these creatures and see what his reaction is?"

Malen, Dwarf Wiz1

"I still want more straight answers from this gobbo. He knows more than he lets on, I think. We'd probably have to brain the other one to show we're serious about it, though." He looks back in the direction of the tower. "I'm not sure I like the idea of going in there. But if you really want to, I won't be the one to stop you."

Malen thinks for a moment. "What if you use the gobbo as a test? That way we can see what happens when this so called safe area is breached, and you've got yourself a decoy when that boy tries to put a knife in your back."

Luthiel Faradar Elven Rogue1

"I agree, Devlin; we could probably take something back there and use it as an excuse to enter the tower. We could claim that we thought these goblins were the creatures we are supposed to exterminate. I think the book should probably remain with Jasper, though, and we should use some other items." Luthiel considers Malen's words for a moment before replying: "I'm not so sure I want to test that safe clearing. If there are other creatures out there, it could be handy to have a safe haven. So what do you think about this idea: Garrit, Cryndo and I go talk to whoever is in the tower, while the rest of you take the goblin near the clearing and resume the interrogation there? If it knows anything about what's going on, then seeing the clearing in its current state may jolt some more information out of it. Sound good?"

Luthiel Faradar Elven Rogue1

"I know it's gruesome, but perhaps I can linger here while you guys take the captives ahead with you- I think the head of one of those we have already slain would be ample proof. We just need to keep the captives from seeing it, so that they don't freak out."

"Bah! Letting that gobbo see what's in store for him if he doesn't behave is a good thing. Just take its thrice damned head off and be done with it."

Luthiel Faradar Elven Rogue1

"Damn it, Malen, I'm not saying you're wrong, but I really don't want to piss off the large, well-armed half-orc! You heard him- we need to be on our best behavior... while we're in his sight, anyway. C'mon, really, I'd much rather keep him happy. I don't really relish the thought of encountering anything else out here without him to stand between me and it!"

Devlin Magruder, human rogue 3

While Luthiel and Malen are discussing things, Devlin goes over to where Luthiel piled the stuff from the camp and picks up one of the sacks. With the sack in one hand and his dagger in the other, Devlin heads over to the goblin he killed at the edge of the woods and prepares to collect the proof.

Luthiel hustles after Devlin. When he reaches him, he hisses "C'mon, Devlin! We want to interrogate this goblin, not make it start searching for ways to escape! Once it gets out of sight, there'll be plenty of time to... harvest the evidence, okay? Let's just get started. You, Malen, and Jasper lead off with the goblin, while I remain behind to explain things to Garrit and Cryndo, as well as gather what we'll need. Please?"

Devlin Magruder, human rogue 3

"Luthiel, you are the one that thing trusts, not me. If I try to lead it away, it will surely panic and try to escape. If we are to get anything useful out of it, you have to be the one to question it. Take Garrit with you if it makes you feel safer, but you have to take the lead on this one. I just wish Malen had an axe to make this easier. Who ever heard of a dwarf without an axe, anyway?" Devlin adds the last part with a smile, hoping to ease some of the tension.
